Does anybody know anybody who has done a suicide door conversion on a 1989 Towncar? The contour of the wheel well opening at the rear door may prevent the installation of durable hinges, but I am curious about this.

I've always wondered this too, and the only thing I could think of was either only using one hinge (almost definitely not a good idea) or making a complicated hinge that'll follow the curve of the door.

I will present this alternate idea to you though, because personally I always thought it'd kinda cool:

How about only converting the front doors to suicide doors? Then all the doors open more like a pair of scissors. *shrug* I always thought that might look pretty neat.

we used to have a car with a slanted front of the front door, it used a hinge centered along the hinge line, but with an extra long arm to attach the door to the hinge,

something like that, so the hinge is with in the body panels, and the curve of it comes out of a slot, They're really clean looking hinges.

That's a pretty good idea and all, but the problem of that design is that in the case of a Town Car, the hinge would have to be right where the wheel/wheel well is.

Guys, don't forget the wiring too, especially if you're doing the front doors like CheeseCakeJim's idea you're up for a little wiring nightmare.

Well, simply, just reverse every thing

Weld on the hinges, rewire everything, reverse the doorhandles n such, and you should be good to go

Hey, I never said you could easily get power windows, locks, or lights in my idea.

It would all be the same, you would just have to extend all the wiring

Well somebody needs to hurry up and try it.

I think somebody should do a Delorean conversion, it would go really well with the flux capacitor in the back seat. And by flux capacitor I mean vanity lights.

I have always thought of a gull wing conversion myself. Not sure if it could be done practically, since on the DeLorean much of the roof opens with the door, it sure would be cool as hell if someone tried it though. I've always wanted gull wings. Besides, if you have digi-dash you already have time circuts. Only thing is, it only displays where you presently are.

The only problem with the gull wing doors is parking. what happens when you go to the mall or a football game and have people park on either side of you? it might be kind of hard to get into your car when you can only open them about 3 feet. cool as hell, but totally impracticle

You could if you wanted to just reverse the hinges, and if you wanted more support tac them on there
You may have to remake the supports though

I wanna see this done

Actually on a real Delorean the big selling point of the doors was that they could be opened 100% with only 14" (IIRC) of clearance.
