1984 towncar, over 160K. Just changed oil again in Oct...10w40 plus filter and some "lubeguard" to boot .Now I'm getting this slight tappett tapping sound that was'nt as prominent as before the oil change! It's especially louder when I rev the engine, but not so much when I'm driving it .Did I do something wrong and is there something to be conserned about?

Probably it's an injector, not a lifter.

Probably the oil is a little thick in the winter. Next oil change, go back to 10w30.

Ummm, isn't Lubeguard supposed to go in the transmission and not the engine oil or is there an oil formulation I'm not familiar with??

I said Lube guard I meant Lucas oil additive

Interesting. For the past couple years I have had a very similar sound at idle in nuetral or park. I found that if the oil got hot or I used thinner oil or synthetic oil that the sound was more prominet and then with 10/40 and some Lucas additive the sound is much less and sometimes not there at all. I felt like the lucas made the oil thicker and serves to "mask" or lubricate the internal engine sound. Which is where "I think" mine is coming from, the engine. I have studied and listened sooo many times and cant place the sound except for coming from the engine itself. Probably a "STETHESCOPE" would be in order!
The sound has never gotten any worse or caused me any trouble so far, but could be annoying...
On a cold start up, not there at all. After driving a half hour or so and the oil is warm, more evident, but again, only in park or neutral, but with the heavier oil and lucas, not bad at all...In your case, it seems that this started "after" the heavier oil and lucas, and then logic would tell me, that the heavier oil, especially on a cold start, needs time to circulate "or maybe", your last oil change gave you a nice flush from some "sludge" that had built up and was deadening the sound? In my case, the thinner the oil is, the more sound...I will follow this post in case someone has some explanations better than what I have come up with....
We should always listen to our engine sounds, but at the time same, if you are getting the same sort of tapping thump like sound as I am, it has been approx. over 20k miles since it started and hasnt worsened.

classic 5.0 worn bearing noise. Keep the oil changed, and use heavier oils, 10-40 or maybe even 20-50 with some Lucas or whatever and it'll run for a long time like that. When it gets to the point of hammering on startup and the idiot light is on at stop lights, you need a new motor. In the meantine, just don't beat on it and it'll be fine.

I know what he means. like a dull thumping. like you are tapping on a solid peice of steel with a towell or something on the end of a hammer, and in a regular pattern, like a heartbeat.
what an analogy...im laughing at myself now!
not a sharp metal sound, but more of a duller thump.
