As per shop manual the first step in servicing the heads is removal of the entire engine. That Intec is really jammed in that bay, its almost impossible to change the last 2 plugs yet alone attempt to remove the entire head. Good luck in whatever you do.

Just curious what diagnostics have been done to determine a blown head gasket as they aren't a real common problem on the 4.6L/5.4L? If the only indication is water in the oil or oil in water, check the tech section for oil filter adapter gasket replacement. Common leak point where coolant and oil run close together and is commonly misdiagnosed as a blown head gasket.

You are better off removing the engine. Good luck.

It's a tight fit. What I have seen done in my local dealership is to lift the body off the frame. It sounds crazy, but it's amazingly effective and not that hard when you consider what is involved and if you have access to a lift.

We used to do that all the time, much easier, especially on the Crown Vics....must have a lift though...;)

The oil/water is coming out of the side of the head and to much smoke coming from the exhaust. We had some freezing weather the other day and the antifreeze level wasnt enough. i cant really lift the body up because its a 180in Stretch navi, I guess i will be taking the engine out in the morning.
Thanks for your help

Never considered that, but it makes sense too.

The stretched Navi would be a tough one. If the engine is out, you might as well check all the other gaskets and consider replacing whatever else is tough to get to now.

Im not sure if this is any help, but I recently had problems with water in my oil and changing the Intake Manifold Gasket did it for me. I know its a long shot, but hey it worked and I have no trace of water in the oil anymore. Did three flushes to get all the junk out.

Hi GaryUk

Hydraulic lock!! Drain the oil pan, pull the spark plugs and see if it cranks.

If you have allready fitted new freeze plugs try squirting some WD-40 into the cylinders and rocking the engine back and forth using a socket/breaker bar on the damper pulley bolt, it might be the coolant has corroded the cylinders slightly causing the pistons to stick in the bores.

ok he's the latest, The engine is out, i have dismantled the bottom end. Two of the big end bearing's have grabbed and caused the engine to sieze. The crank has gone to be ground and .25 over sized big end shells are going in. I am going to change the head gaskets as a precaution due to the hours of labours involved in removing the engine. Thanks for alll your help.PS can you recommend any parts supplier in the USA that will ship to the UK ? regards.

Man, GaryUK, must purchase from Ed (discountfordparts). He is a great guy, delivers quickly, and always gets you the correct part. And my favorite; his prices as the lowest I can find!

Coupled with shipping to the UK; is there any other option?

Wow Gary, what a job! How many hours would you say to get that engine out alone? Should get many more years out of her! I'm looking to pick up a busted, busted Navi in the future, wondering what I'm in for!

Willie I'm speechless, Ed never gave us a heads up! :)

Well today is my last day, Willie has been with me for the last six years as my understudy and because of some high insurance cost I had to find a job that had better coverage and rates, I will be on the boards in the future but Willie will do a good job for you.

if he slips up I'll be watching!
