Under the small plate on the 'valve' covers. Yank the wires out, blow out any sand with an air compressor, and use a torque wrench to tighten the new plugs. Be very careful on how tight you snug them, 15 ft-lbs or so. It would be good to check the service manual on the torque, www.fordcds.com

v8_dave, there are no wires on the 32 Valve Intech engine, its Coil On plug.

bigblock671, its a complete BITCH to remove the plugs on that engine. There is absolutely no room to get the last 2. Take your time and get few cold ones, its gonna be a long day.

Yes, its worse than the regular 5.4L. The 32 Valve engine sits a bit higher making it harder to get the tools into the spark plug holes.

Thats my fault, I was mistaken with the pre '98 Intech in my Conti.

I have been lookin at that 32 valve 5.4L in my new to me Navigator. They look like hell to work on. I have changed plugs several regular 5.4L but this 32 valve looks like a nightmare. Do you need to remove the upper intake plenum? I also noticed it had small coolant hoses running to the pcv valve and were the pcv valve goes into the plenum. Very strange!! That 32 valve motor has great power though.

wasnt as bad as i thought. the egr pipe needs to be disconnected at driver side exhaust mani then pulled up slightly to remove access plate on valve cover. the truck had a dead miss on cyl #8. so i replaced that coil and did boots and plugs on all others, truck runs much better but when i scan it am still seeing either a random miss fire code and have seen the missfire #8 pop up. i cleared the codes several times. is it possible the cyl got washed down when the plug wasnt firing?. was probably driven about 100 miles with the miss to get it home any ideas thanks guys

So did you replace the spark plug on #8 or just the coil? Did you gap the plugs properly? These InTech engines are like women, very sensitive :)

It idles fine though? Have you done any other tuneup bits? Clean MAF and fuel filter? Hows power and gas mileage?

Driving 100 miles with a miss is a bad idea. You could have clogged up your cats. What codes exactly are you getting?

havnt driven it since plugs and cop replacement. before plugs n cop it had misfire p0308 and system lean code. the dead miss is gone it has always had a slightly rough idle. hat 104 k on it i will drive it a little tomorrow to see what codes it will actually set. the only reason it was driven that far is because the person driving it was about 75 miles from home with the miss thanks

Lean and missing with rough idle? I would start looking for a vac leak, most common area is PCV vac tubing on most mod motors.

will check that also dave i did replace the pcv line assy about a year ago when i had the infamous lean bank 1 and 2 codes thanks for helping guys sometimes its right in front of ya and we dont see it

drove truck today it has a slight stumble and the only code set is p0174 lean bank 2 now to look for a dreaded vacuum leak on the driver side

That's usually a soft/cracked vac line. Might wanna change your PCV valve (Ford, nothing else) at the same time too.

wouldnt that cause both banks to be lean? i did replace pcv hose assy about 1 year ago thanks

i am borrowing a smoke machine tomorrow and will post results thanks to all that have helped me

passed the smoke test for vac leaks. i am leaning towards a weak #8 injector or a compression problem. i will pull #8 out again and do compression test. has anyone changes an injector on the intech?looks like a real treat to do.

Damn, yea most vac leaks throw both banks but sometimes its just small enough that it can throw one bank. Too bad the something simple is out.

I know a Conti Intech guy changed an injector simply, but some things are more buried in your setup. Good luck with the compression test.

did compression test. #8 had 205 #6 had 195. plug looked wet in #8. so i put a new plug in #8 and switched # 6 and 8 coils to see if misfire followed. well there is no misfire now but still have stumble and lean bank 2 code. i thinking maybe a dribbling injector on #8 any ideas? ltft,s are 4.5 bank 1 and 24.5 bank 2 i even switched oxy sensors the down stream ones to see if ltft would change no change

while poking around with scanner in emisions data i came up on injector #8 fault now to figure out taking the manifold off.. eeeek

Probably can just jack up the fuel rail a bit and sneak it out, and replace with new orings. Download a fordcds.com manual to save some hassle.
