Read a few threads concerning a burning oil smell after I started to smell oil in the cabin on my 01 LS V8. Took it to the dealer to let them do the diagnostic and they suggested replacing the valve cover gaskets, plugs, and possibly the ignition coil boots, but they said they wouldn't know about the boots until they started working on it.

I've read a few people indicate replacing the valve cover gaskets isn't that bad, just time consuming and is a rather common problem. I've got the shop manual CD and will browse that tonight.

Dealer wants $1100 to do the work - so I'm going to do it myself.

Any thoughts on what I should expect?

Thanks,

Mark.

it is not too hard - but be prepared for a very frustrating day of work.

you will need every extension and u-knuckle in your socket set - since many of the bolts are under, back and impossible to see.

you will also need a 7mm gear wrench - I only found it at Lowes.

buy a small pack of di-electric grease to slather on the boots.

don't buy the parts from the dealer - get them from FastPArtsNetwork.com or TeamFord.com - they will be almost 40% cheaper.
