I think they were meant to be played while the vehicle was stopped... you know, like "back seat action time".

I have heard of a record player in a car. It actualy worked "upside down" and hung from under the glove compartment. Dang, I can't remember the car though.

Rocky Covington of Amway (Quickstar) fame had one at the same time he lived in a house with mushrooms growing up from the carpet.

My dad had a new Chrysler 300 around 1960,had a record player under the center of the dash, was mounted on a spring base and played 45 RPM records.Worked fairly well unless you hit a pretty good size bump. Now that car had some power.Had transmission control buttons on the steering wheel.

The Imperials had them too. The push button transmission was the original "Tourque Flite" Transmission.

Watch the first 5-10 minutes of the movie Quiz Show. They show the main character buying a 1957-ish Chrysler with the record player. Total 1950s decadence. :)

I've gone to many car shows and never have noticed one ever installed or for sale. This I take it was a Chrystler thing only? I tend to look mainly at FLM and skip everything else. I guess I'll have to broaden my viewing at the shows...

I can remember them as dealer installed options then. Even recall J.C Whitney had them as well. Yeah, worked a lot better parked. But then 4 track cassettes came along...:D

some info on the auto record players.

seems although they were 45 rpm in size, they only played at 16 2/3 rpm so they could get about 60 mins per side of music.
