A while ago, i cant find the post(it was in a random thread about something else), someone posted about removing the air silencer( or something with similar results) for the Essex conti. Is there something like this or am I just crazily imagining it, again.:D

No it was a real conversation.
The silencer is in the top section of the filter box, it snaps in place and can be easily removed with little effort.

Somebody take some pictures of the airbox/silencer so we can make a tech article out of it.

You'll be immortalized in the tech section for your kindness. Make them as easy to see as possible. ;)

I used a screwdriver on one of those tabs to twist the silencer in the hole til the tabs and slots lined up. It will only twist clockwise.

You get something like this that comes out where the intake connects to the airbox

Also, the pipe from the airbox to the fender is restrictive in itself. I put a larger one on, I believe I pulled it from a 4cyl 87ish Taurus.

Speaking of the air box - does anyone have a spare bottom half for sale or trade?
(I'd post in the WTB, but I figure the few guys who may have one are already reading this thread ;))

If you really had a lot of free time, you'd do this:

No, cause all your engine is breathing now is hot air from the engine compartment, which kills performance. Not to mention a whole lot of fine particulate matter that goes right thru those hiflo filters and wears out valve seats, rings and cylinder walls.
Is that a wood divider panel in there??????? It might help a bit when the fan isn't running anyways. Better off to make a full box to keep the hot air away from the filter.

The purpose of the PLEXI divider panel (fitted around the tube)is to block hot air from the engine, remove the battery there and there are Giant holes, that feed into it.
A sealed box would be better, but the heat over the top of it isn't nearly as relevant as blocking the heat soak off the tranny and water hose.

Excellent! I will add that to the article. If people can find that part, great. If not, Steve Moran used a piece of rubber hose and it turns out just as well (maybe better?)

what does removing the air silencer do for the car?
i might consider it. thanks

frees up some airflow in the intake side. the air silencer really can restrict the flow. once you see how small the hole is, you will wonder what ford was thinking. Getting a larger intake to the filter box will help too, thats pretty restrictive on the conti's

Just a quick note guys.
I had long ago removed my filter box and replaced it with a cone style, so after reading this I dug my old box out of hiding and tried it.
I wouldn't recommend that you try it on your car.
As stated in the tech article:
With the silencer gone, remove the plate made to hold it inside the airbox. Though it will snap off, you might need to cut it to completely pull it out of the tube. Finish off all cuts by smoothing every corner off to ensure maximum airflow. And there you have it; the upper half of this project is done.
But what isn't noted is that the "plate made to hold it inside the airbox" also has the contact area for the sealing ring that molded on the airfilter. Look below...see the "channel" that runs around the airbox..all the white stuff on it? That's the filter seal contact area - you remove that and you have the potential for unfiltered air to leak through.

It may very well be that apart from custom fabbed work, that a cone style filter would be a better choice over removing the silencer from the stock air box.

That is not the plate I'm talking about. That text corresponds with the picture right above it. (which is below)

Maybe I should change "plate" to "round plate?"
If I totally confused you, maybe Steve can help. This article is his baby. :)

This could clear it up just a little.
You can see by the picture that Pro has above where I cut it out.
the liner is cut off about 1/4 inch down the side so it can seal.

Ok, I'm officially confused. I thought we were just punching the hole (the round hole) bigger after removing the silencer from the tube.
Help?

I see no reason why a person could not punch the hole larger.
I just did it that way due to the fact I just thought the air flow would be more direct. I have no reason other then that.

This would be a lot easier if I owned one of these...maybe in the future when I'm rich and have a big garage. :)

I was at the junkie today....all the fords there (all 91-92's) have this big box on top of the tube, so i couldent really see the snorkel too well. it was raining so i wasnt really into messin with it too much to find out it wasnt useable. anyone know if that big box thingy is part of the snorkel or is it totally a seperate part?
