well my dash light came on and i went to autozone and the guy scanned her and he said it was just my gas cap... so i went and bought a new cap and reset the code by disconnecting the neg battery terminal for 30 minutes. well all was fine for about a week and now the light is back. im trying to figure out what would cause this. i dont have the exact code but he said it was something about evac maybe, but anyway he was positive it was just the gas cap. does anyone have any idea's?

Could be a line has come off the evap canister under the trunk pan, its a very awkward place for them on the 98+ Panthers, they get beat up if you back up your wheels to a curb. Not sure if it would throw that code though, but it would be great to know what code that is it threw.

Stuck to the underside of the trunk floor pan. Alot of the Vic guys have this problem is why I mention it.

This is very lengthy testing, cheaper to throw a EVAP Cannister purge valve at it....(really)
I will send by email if wanted.....
Some vehicles may exhibit a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0442, P0455, P0456, P0457 or P1442 or a "Check Fuel Cap" Lamp illuminated with DTC P0457 for the Evaporative Emission System. This may be caused by loose or leaking hoses, loose or broken fuel cap, a leak at the top of the fuel filler pipe neck, etc.
ACTION:
Use the Rotunda Leak Detector Smoke Machine (Part 218-00001) or equivalent, to locate and repair leaks in the Evaporative Emission System. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
Definitions of Acronyms
CVS Canister Vent Solenoid
DTC Diagnostic Trouble Code
EVAP Evaporative Emissions System
EVMV Electronic Vapor Management Valve
FTP Fuel Tank Pressure
MIL Malfunction Indicator Lamp
NGS New Generation STAR Tester
PID Parameter Identifier
WDS Worldwide Diagnostic SystemSERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE:THIS PROCEDURE SUPERSEDES ALL OTHER PROCEDURES PUBLISHED IN SERVICE MANUALS AND TSB ARTICLES.
NOTE:MANY EVAP LEAKS ARE CAUSED BY A LOOSE OR FAULTY CAP. IF THE FUEL CAP IS SUSPECT DURING VISUAL INSPECTION, DO NOT DISTURB THE FUEL CAP UNTIL THE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE IS COMPLETE. IF THE LEAK VERIFICATION FAILS, THE CAP CAN BE REPOSITIONED OR REPLACED AND THE TEST REPEATED. THIS ACTION WILL ISOLATE THE CAP FROM THE REST OF THE EVAP SYSTEM AS A POTENTIAL CONCERN. IF DEBRIS ON THE SEALING SURFACE OF THE CAP APPEARS TO BE THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK, CLEAN THE CAP AND REINSTALL.

I can't diagnose this over the internet, you either have a leak that will be needed to be tested with specialized equipment, or a faulty Fuel tank pressure sensor. If it was my car, and I was to guess, I would replace the FTP sensor in the tank, they do go bad. Are you sure the o-ring on the gas cap is good, not torn?. I would check it again. The only thing that is going to cause this code is if you leave the car running while getting gas, or a leak or a bad FTP sensor in the tank....Rich

Weather or intermittent electrical glitches may do that. Knock on wood, my airbag light hasn't come back on in a year for no good reason as I didnt fix it. But maybe banging on the dash to fix the BDA did the deed.
