how acurate are these scanners used at autozone? are the dealerships using the same scanners to pull these codes? the dealership wants about 82 bucks.... is this service worth it...for that price i would be able to make them pin point the exact problem and they would have to find the exact problem or i would be entitled to a refund. so does anyone have info on this?

A code is a code. The Ford scan tools can do much, much more than just codes, but the $82 wont get you any of that. Lets see what Autozone turns up for you first.

Yes jealous! Hmm, I can be in Pittsburgh in about 2 hours...

Most dealers charge 1.0hr Diag time for a check engine light. That would include pinpointing the problem. That's money for them if they find it in 10 minutes, but money for you if it takes more than an hour. It can go either way.

Being OBD II that's not a code 442, it's P0442. There's quite a difference.
You need to check the evaporative system for leaks, it could be anywhere in the system before the purge valve. I recall hearing about an easily damaged line under the rear of the car on Panther vehicles. Start there, anything low enough to be damaged when backing up to a curb.

Yep! In your other thread, Fordace explains "This may be caused by loose or leaking hoses, loose or broken fuel cap, a leak at the top of the fuel filler pipe neck, etc." So just get creative and start checking hoses. Or you can bypass the system, thats up to you.

how would i bypass the system? do i even need this system?

Crownvic.net does not allow illegal mods so I dont know how to do it. But sit down with the service manual for an hour and I am sure you will fig out what needs to be disconnected and plugged.

It wont fail emissions without it, nor should it cause any other issues. MPG may go down .2mpg, I dont know.
