View Full Version : Got a blowout on my way to Florida...

Since I bought my Town car, I've been leery of the tires. On the car are 3 Michlen Symmetrys, and an XW4, the spare was the 4th Symmetry.

All the Symmetrys had dry rot cracks, not so bad on the tread, but on the sidewall, on a couple of the tires there were almost cracks around the whole tire, basically just above the white wall.

The XW4 didn't have any cracks, and also had more tread... when I took out the spare one time I saw it was oddly worn, which I bet had to do with the bad ball joint on that wheel. Anyway, last month when I got an alignment after replacing ball joints and tie rod ends, I was going to get new tires, but the guy said I have about 10k miles left on these tires... I measured out between 4-6 32nds of tread, so I figured I would get another year left.

Well on my way to FL, I had my music turned up, windows closed and climate control set to 74*. I had the cruise set at 72, and all of a sudden I felt a vibration... at first I thought it was something with the road... nope... road is freshly paved... then I thought the wheel threw a wheel weight... so I turned the music down and slowed down... but I heard the sound of a flat tire...

First time I ever got a flat tire on the road, the first time I ever got a flat tire anywhere was when I tried, and did run over a curb in the Coupe 2 years ago and tore the side wall...

Really it wasn't anything bad at all, I didn't even know what the heck it was until I was stopped too. I was expecting to see a deflated tire and a nail or something sticking out... I was kinda shocked to see the tire though.

So then the fun begins, I hop in the trunk and pull out the spare (which I did service with proper air when I first got the car) and got the jack and lug nut wrench which were in a neat black bag, and appeared to have never once been used... old folks in FL must have had roadside assistance.

So I break the lug nuts free, remembered to turn off the air suspension (I've been really good with that) and start to jack the car up. When I pulled off the road, there wasn't much of a shoulder, and I went about an ince too far, as the edge of the jack was off the pavement an on the grass, but it still looked like it was fine, well I get the wheel just off the ground, and I see the jack, with the weight of the car on it start to shift... not good, so I start to lower the jack... well, I must have got a turn and a half out of the jack handle before the whole car shifted sideways, falling off the jack and pinning the jack between the frame and the pavement, slightly benging the frame of the jack.

Well that stinks, cause I had to room to turn the jack handle at all to get it to collapse, and that was my only jack, I'd have to call AAA or flag somebody down.... but I was thinking... there had to be a way to lift the car a bit so I can get the jack free.

Well, part of the Lincoln air bag suspension is that it levels the car out when off, and when running, it rasies the rear a couple inches for better ride and stuff.... I remembered this, and I fliped the air suspension back on, put the key in the ignition, turned the ignition on and waited a minute... sure enough the car started it raise itself, and I was able to easily get the jack out from under the car. So I went around, got back in the car, fired it up and drove it back onto the shoulder, making sure I was completly off the grass this time.

Rest of the ride was trouble free, when I got to Aimee's I went out to get tires, looked around for best price... I knew the exact tire I wanted. Goodyear Assurance ComforTred. The same exact tire I had on the Coupe 5 weeks before it was stolen... it was an awesome tire and I coudln't wait to get it on the Town Car.

So, Sears actually had them, and matched Tire Kingdom on price. All 4 tires with everything included and road hazzard came to $550... alot cheaper then I paid last year at the Good Year dealer... heh.

Right before I left my house, I saw my Sears card on the counter and wasn't going to take it, but figured I would in case I needed anything... good though tho, cause the tires went on that.

So that Michilen XW4 which was in the best shape with most tred is my new spare, I've got a slick set of new Assurance ComforTreds, and I had an alignment done at Sears a few weeks ago, I asked them to check it, and they did.... my camber was way out, they fixed it... but he dosn't know how it happened... he said it had nothing to do with the new front end components, and I didn't hit anything either... but that is all fixed now.

80k mile tire, there is no tire noise at all, and the car rides really smooth, exactly what I wanted. It is not made for handling, and neither is the car. There is a decent amount of side wall flex and going down the highway and swerving the car sharply feels like all 4 tires are piviting around an axis... but the car responds well in evasive manuvers, but most of all it rides smoother, which is what I wanted. I quickly thought about the TripleTreds, which are more of a touring/sporty tire... because my Town Car does have the handling package, and did handle pretty well... but I'd rather have the quietness, smoothness, traction and tredwear of the ComforTreds again, so I got those.

All in all, I am very happy... wasn't exactly ready for new tires just yet, as the Isuzu needs new tires really soon (probably as soon as these are paid off) but I had to, as I would have had no spare, and the other tires were really in no better shape.

Here are some pictures of the damage... just a cell phone picture... no damge to the car when it fell on the jack except a really tiny chip on the rocker planel plastic trim from part of the jack scraping against it, and the jack is slightly bent, but still works fine.

I can't say I've even seen a passenger car tire go like this... but no doubt due to the cracks, which were dead center of where the whole thing blew out... I wasn't going excessively fast either (72mph) and I keep my tire pressures where the should be often. No loud bang, no jerk of the car, no swerve... just all of a sudden a slight vibration... It probably could have been alot worse.... either way it turned out very well, I always feel very safe in this car.

Damn! That tire was shredded!

Glad you weren't hurt (and the TC too). Another note to never try jacking the car unless on a proven surface. Best if you carry a 2 ft x 2 ft piece of 1/2 in plywood in the trunk so you can put the jack on that.

I had a similar experience a few years ago in my 2001 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Just heard this loud noise from the rear of the car (presumably the "blow out") and then was hearing some funky noises right after. All while doing 65 mph. So I slowed down, took the next exit, pulled into a Denny's parking lot and couldn't believe what I saw! The driver's side rear was flat. No where near as shredded as yours, but flat. That tire only had 19k mi on it and was only 3 years old, but I guess I ran over a nail. So I just changed it and continued on the trip (Sacramento to Dallas, love those full size spares!). Those tires did end up getting changed last October due to dry rot on the sidewalls (36k mi on them). Replaced with Yokohama Avid H4S.

I've heard good things about the Assurance tires. Kinda scares me with the Symmetry tires, since I have them on my Mark VIII (came with it last November). They look good though.

You made out alright! Good luck with the new GY's, thats all I buy. Lucky you had the lock-nut remover in the trunk.

lock nut? No wheel locks on the car.. just lug nuts.

I made sure int he past the car had a jack and lug wrecnh too.

I tend to start a brand loyalty thing.... and personally I like Goodyear tires, I've had excelent luck with every Goodyear tire I've had form the cheap basic Sears version to the top end luxury tires.

I had these exact tires on my '93 Coupe DeVille last year, only were on the car for 5 weeks before it was stolen :( They replaced a set of Goodyear Allegra's from SAM's club... just like on the Town Car.. handling went down while ride really improved. Although even with the Town Car having the handling package, the Caddy still handled alot better... though the chassis was totally different... better suited for spirited driving, and I had did alot of work to the car also.

I really reccomend these tires though.

I drove maybe a total of a 3/4 of a mile from when the tire first went until I was stopped? maybe a mile tops, I was going 72mph but I quickly slowed down and stopped... so I wasn't driving on that for a long time... it just looks like the whole sidewall just burst out where the cracks were.

I just got rid of my comfortreads and am glad for it. 80K miles..yea right, I got 38K. And you very accurately discribed their handling...miserable. You can have a quite smooth ride and some degree of handling, but not with those tires. I am now sporting a set of yoki's Avid touring (w/ whitewall) and while I wont say they are the best tire ever, they certainly are just as quite and smooth as the comfortreads with normal, predictable handling.

Night Wolf

it seems like they are love or hate...

I wasn't too concerned about handling, I wanted the best riding tire I could get... and the ComforTreds are quite good for that. I had them on my Coupe DeVille last year, what a difference they made on that car!

It seems like they have a soft sidewall, which gives it a very nice ride, but what you feel is the soft side wall around the turns, I have noticed though that the tires grip really well, and once the sidewall does its thing, it is quite predictable and maintains very good traction.

was rolling down JTB in jax beach area and the right front tire did that to me at 72 mph... shredded....

But the BIG question here is....... are the new tires WHITE WALL or black wall? ;)

I agree with you on the feel of the tires. I want the SMOOTH, QUITE and the EASY ON THE BUMPS kind of ride. I am not big on the handling end either, because I really don't drive a lot of highway with my Lincoln. I drive her pretty slow and easy.

I put a set of Symmetrys on a year ago this past May. I personally think the Symmetrys in the 215/70/R15 size with the (600 treadwear I think it is) rides aweful and hard! I felt every bump in the road. I loved the narrower white wall, but they gave a horrible ride and feel to the car.

I personally think the treadwear number has (A LOT) to do with the feel of the ride on a car. The rep that I talked to on the phone from Michelin said it doesn't, but I say differently.

I put my same XW4's back on after I had the Symmetrys removed. I'm getting to the point where I'd like to get a new set of tires because the XW4'w are getting old.

Had all four comfort treads have flats within a month with 10,000 miles. all had valve stem failures.

Isn't the valve stem an item provided by the tire shop? I don't believe it goes with the tires.

Yes, valve stems are usually replaced with the tires, but some shops try and cheat by not installing new ones. They aren't provided with or by the tire manufacturer though.

That pic with the blown sidewall is why I don't trust tires that have any cracking on them anymore. I've had tire failures before, and I've been lucky. No more. If in doubt, I replace the tires with a good quality replacement. No more no-brand tires either. I've learned my lesson on those too.

Most definitly it has white walls! That is another reason I got the ComforTreds over the Triple Treds.....

wanna talk treadware numbers? these ComforTreds have a 700 and are the softest riding tire I've seen.

I would highly reccomend the Assurance ComforTreds, I had them on my Cadillac, and now on the Lincoln, and they are great... IF you are looking for ride... if you are looking for a sporty touring tire that offers ride and handling, then get the triple tred.... otherwise they are great.

Symmetries were on the car when I bought it, and the car was sitting at various dealer lots for 2 yrs before I picked it up.

The tires were not underinflated, that is a different type of wear, they were just dry rotted, there were cracks on the side wall of the tire, around the edges.

I didn't like those tires though, I read reviews and people said they are supposed to be a nice luxury car tire... and I wasn't happy with them at all.

Heh, I got my brand new digital camera, and washed/ICE'd the Town Car the other day, but I haven't had time to go get pics... I will soon tho.

A bad thing for me, Good Year doesn't make that tire with the white wall in the 215/70/R15. :dunno:

This tire size is getting very limited with a thinner white wall. I think the only brand name that I have come across that does have it, is the Michelin Symmetry. And after your experience with the Symmetry, that's a bit scarey!

Honestly, while I can't say the Symmetry impressed me at all, I will say that I don't believe that particular blow out was a factor of the origanal quality of the tire. The tire was dry rotted with sun/weather cracks, on the side wall no less.... I knew they were in rough shape, but figured I could get a little more service out of them.

I woudln't say that it supports the longevity of the Symmetry tire either... kind of an isolated case.

I know that if I wasn't getting the ComforTreds, or any other GoodYear tire, then I would not be getting symetries on the car... nothing form Michilen relly impresses me too much.

I have great luck with Mastercraft Sensus tires. They have the 700 treadwear and last a long time. I havent tried those goodyears before. I wish I would have known about those before I put tires on the Mark VIII. My 90 Town Car accumulated 101,000 miles before I replaced the Mastercrafts. They are usually 380 or around there installed.

Last summer on the Thruway west of Rochester my right rear tire
threw its tread at about 70, in heavy traffic. What surprised me is the speed with which the cars cleared out behind me!

The tire held its air through all of this, so the old barge got stopped
right side up.

Just blew out one of my V-rated goodyears.

...over a speedbump my valve stem blew out and I didnt realize it was flat until a few hundred yards up the road. And by that time at 90 degrees the sidewall has bulges from broken webbing=junked. I think the tire shop messed up, I will have a talk with them tomorrow, although it was one year ago.

Brand loyalty: It's either Goodyear or Copper; The only American tire companies.

Ummm, I might be wrong but doesn't Goodyear produce some of their tires in China? I think it was mentioned in another thread...

Yes, Goodyear has factories all over the world. The point is to buy from companies based in America; That's a fairly easy determination to make.

Second, try to buy products that are made in America. That's a little more difficult, but possible via the sidewall info.

The guy at Sears that said I could get another 10k outta them?

Yeah, I know.... atleast he was honest, but those tires did have alot of dry rot cracks on them... guess it was finally too much.

Follow up tho... the new Goodyear Assurance Comforteds are awesome! I've put almost 6,000 miles on them so far and they are great, I like them alot. Super quiet, really comfortable ride, excelent tread ware (don't even look used at all) and the mushy handling... well, I'm used to it now, so its not a big deal, and they really do grip well, even in heavy rain :)
