Well today is my one free day to change my tranny fluid/filter. Im concerned that I may have the wrong filter. I bought it a few weeks back. It is a Pro-King FK-266 but it says for the AODE. I thought I had the 4r70w (95 on up)! So I check out Adavnce website, they list both for a 97. I thought I saw a good post here about reading a VIN and there being a 'W' for the tranny type, but Ive searched here for an hour and no luck. Could someone take a second to clarify for me ? thanks much!!

The 4R70W transmission is just a "new build" on the older AOD-E, with many interchangeable parts. See here: http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00080.html

Thanks though. This complicated tech article says AODE 92-94 TC only. So my filter indicates for a AODE. I have a 97.

The pickup port is deeper on the 4R70W filters. It will work, its just a 4R70W filter wont fit an AODE.

Finished up a bit ago. No big messes (I had one of those long thin blanket tubs doing nothing). I find my confusion came from the odd picture in the Advance web page. It was very dark, and to me looked like a different filter. But it was the same one, different pic/view.
The great news is that there was no plastic plug! So I now know that my fluid was changed at least once! The bad was that whom ever did it, tossed the re-useable gasket. I had to use the new one. I took her for a short ride and the first thing I notice, is the quiet! Now also today I did oil and filter with new 5-30, so this is probably why. I KNOW the (used car) dealer put standard 10-40 oil in or something goofy like that. Second is we now shift like a dream, no herky-jerky anymore.
I basically used Sysanalyst tech article today, so thank you very much to him for that. I put back in approx. 11.5 quarts, the capacity being 13.9 quarts. So Im pretty happy having got most out of the converter and all.
Now that its cooled from my short test ride, I had a teeny leak. So I just came in from tightening 5-6 bolts. I was afraid to over tighten them if you remember. So I remembered someone said 9ftlbs. I think its not quite enough. I also think I read (haynes?) that 18 ftlbs was the number. We will see.
Thanks everyone and Happy Fourth!
