OneWayStreet

The OneWayStreet's took a vacation to the Outer Banks in North Carolina last week. Since my daughter invited one of her girl friends to come along, we needed something larger to make the trip. Thought I was getting a Freestyle, but the fleet manager at work promised it to someone else. All that was left was this '07 Edge (I know its not a MKX, but its close). This one has a 3.5 and is NOT AWD.

Picture was taken in the parking area of our rented beach house, next to the Tiki Bar.
Anyway, after spending a week with the Edge, gotta say it was a positive experience. With 2 teenage girls and my 12 year old son sitting in the back seat, they were a little cramped but had plenty of leg room, even with the driver's seat all the way back. With the fold down cup holder (occupies the middle backrest of the back seat) in the upright position, my daughter complained it hurt her back after hours of travel. Otherwise, they were able enjoy the ride without complaining about "he's touching me" and typical sibling arguments like that. Back seat travelers did like the power port in the back of the console, and there was an RF jack inside the console for ipods.
Mrs OneWayStreet and I had plenty of room up front and found the seats comfortable. I became accustomed to all of the controls quickly, although I hate the Multi-function switch position. This is a fleet vehicle, so there were not many bells and whistles, only the necessities typically found in a rental vehicle. I missed not having the radio controls in the steering wheel. Seating position is high, I was "almost" up there with many small SUV's!
As far as loading it up with luggage, we were able to cram quite a bit in it. Luggage included one large suitcase, about 4 "carry-on" size bags, misc bags of food, toiletries, DVD's, a small coller, and other misc stuff, along with 2 boogie boards. There is space under the back seat for small items. This Edge did not have a roof rack. We would have liked to have taken OUR pillows and some beach chairs and umbrella, but there was no room for them. Still, we brought everything we NEEDED. Oh yeah, and I wasn't able to see out the back window, but the large outside rear view mirrors helped immensely.
Gas mileage was great for a vehicle such as this! IIRC, it has an 18 gallon tank, and we make it to the outer banks WITHOUT a fuel stop, a 343 mile trip Bel Air to Kill Devil Hills! It averaged 22.3 MPG on the highway, including sitting in 2 traffic jams! The worse MPG was 19.5 including waiting 45 minutes for the ferry to arrive while idling with the AC on.
The V6 performed well, but torque-steers like mo-fo! I was satisifed with the shift points of the trans. Brakes stopped very well, handling was decent but I would have upgraded the tires and wheels had I bought one of these things.
While on the ferry from Hatteras to Okracoke, had a guy ask me lots of questions about the Edge. He said it looked like the BMW (yeah, right).
We put 1153 miles on it and were pleased with the experience. On a long haul such as this, we didn't feel tired after getting out of it. I would recommend one of these to anyone considering it. It's definitely more nimble than an SUV and was much easier to park than SUV. Just ask the guy with the Tahoe who couldn't park in a space at putt-putt. After many tries, he gave up. I wheeled the Edge in there on the first try. :p However, if you like to take lots of stuff with you on a beach vacation, you may want to look at something else. I now know why there are so many SUV's driving around on the streets of the Outer Banks.
That's my (unprofessional) take on the Edge.
