In the model year 1991 - 2000 Class, I took Second Place to a 1998 RED Corvette that came to the show 20 minutes before PEER JUDGED Ballots were to be turned in. <sigh> 12 cars in my class so I'm not too disappointed. Can't come in FIRST every time out!

After going to a car show, i have a new-found respect for your car man, and all the trophy's you have :drink:
But im wondering, how should i talk cars to these guys? I'm only 19 and im sure i scare the living hell outa these older guys with their nice cars; probably cause i kinda look like a thug
I dont know, is it like, some shows are easy to talk to people about their cars, and others aren't?

Well, Wiggles... it's like this...
"How are ya? ...NICE RIDE! Ya know, I have a Lincoln Town Car/LS/Mark VII/VIII, etc., and I'm looking to do something different with the engine/paint/suspension/body; you know, dress it up a bit. May I ask who did your powder coating/chrome/customizing work? Your's looks awsome".
Wiggles ... be yourself; try to hang around conversations (discreetly) to pick up on little things about the owner's cars. If there is a registration placard in the window and you are admiring the car, use the ownner's name; Mr. Jones/Smith, etc. Let HIM or her if the owner is a female tell YOU to call them by a first name. Introduce yourself if you want. Then compliment the ride and ask your questions. Don't monopolize an owner's time. They'll answer your questions but don't make an afternoon out of talking to one person.
Enjoy yourself is really the only other thing I can tell you. When I went to my first show with Oldschool back in '04, I was a bit intimidated by all the great cars that were at Springfield Ford. But I walked around, took pictures, asked questions and thirty or so trophies later including two from a National Show with two different cars, I'm as comfortable as I can be.
I remember names, I remember what other car owners tell me about their cars and then see what changes they made; I network myself and the conversation usually includes at least five minutes about the LM7 Club and then back to cars in general. Just go out there and have fun with it.
Drop the "goth" lookin' clothes, shave the beard and take that silly ring outta yer nose! hehehehe Just kidding... seriously, be yourself. That's the best advice I can give you.
Being that the Mark VII is now my daily driver (since I sold the Townie) I'm always aware of how my car looks. It takes a TON of work, every week for my car to look the way it does. Sometimes I'll do two cruise nights and two shows on the weekends. That's a lot of " spiffin' " up you have to do when you reach your next event.
I have a bad habit now of carrying around a microfiber towel in my back pocket whenever I go out ... "....Jack, why the rag?" "Because I have a black car". "Okay, but why the rag?" "BECAUSE I HAVE A BLACK CAR!!!!" :p
Get a few shows under your belt as a spectator and get the feel for it. Once you get your entered, it'll open your eyes to a great hobby!

Ok man, thanks
Like you said i gotta get a feel for it to.
I was probably just in awe of all the amazing cars there. They had a 79' Mark V with 3,500 miles on it, i wanted to ask about it but i didn't.
And, im just wondering, is it common for people to want to sell their cars when they goto the shows? There was about 15 lincolns there, and 6-8 of them were for sale, it was odd.
Thanks Jack!

You're welcome. Most organized shows will NOT let you have a For Sale sign on/in the car unless there is a specific "car corral" on the show grounds. That doesn't mean that there can't be "discussions" about a possible sale amoung the show participants and spectators. Just like in corporate men's rooms, deals are made all the time. Cruise nights are a different story. I see three to five for sale signs on just about any given cruise night.
It never hurts to ask, but Wiggles, don't just ask for the sake of asking. If you're SERIOUS about making an offer on a car, be up front with the car owner. MOST of these guys are just like you and me; car enthusiasts and some are also big time collectors.
There was the Steve Marconi Collection at the Penns Grove show that was worth almost 2 million dollars. 10 cars ...averaging 200k a piece! You'll be surprised what prices some of these cars are bringing in! Another thing ... be an informed buyer.
You'll find this and other boards have a lot of information about "what a car might be worth". Grab a copy of Hemmings News and look through that. Don't let auctions like Barrett-Jackson intimidate you either. Most of those cars aren't worth two thirds of the prices they bring in. Barrett-Jackson is a toy store for rich guys! :p
Have fun!
Oh..... one more thing... and I broke the cardinal rule myself at a show on July 4th.... If you don't win a trophy ... don't complain about it. In my case, I thought it was justified. OldSchool and I were enetred in the show. He had "Pinkin" and I had my Mark.
The cars were put in classes (as they should be) but in OUR class, the registration desk folks decided to put in OUR Stock Class, a 200-something Lamborghini. An absolutely gorgeous machine. Even the dust on the engine was clean. BUT, it should have been put in an "Exotic" Class instead of the 1980 and UP (yes, an almost 30 year window of model years) that we were in. It took foirst in the class. How were "we" able to compete with something like that????? I wasn't the only one that had complaints. There were similar instances in other classes.
Long story short, about a week later, I found out that the car did NOT belong to the husband and wife team that brought it in; it belonged to a friend of theirs and he let them "borrow" it just for this show. Right off the showroom floor so of course it was going to be perfect. This is stuff you run into at car shows. Along with the "politics" of some of the clubs. Stay out of the politics and the cliques and you'll have a great time and learn a lot to boot.

Surprises me they'd have that much hardware at show in Penns Grove. Where was it at exactly? Its like the next town over from me. Not a terribly big place, and really the only claim to fame is that Bruce Willis is from there. There is also a very good Italian restaurant there if you happen to be hungry.

Hi Thain...
They shut down South Broad Street for about 5 blocks and lined up both sides of the street plus used the lot next to Pat's Pizza and Vittorio's. ;) If you're talking about Paulo's Italian restaurant ... yes... excellent food! <slurp>
