View Full Version : Transmission Flushing

Hey, I was wondering how to go about the transmission flushing, since I'm getting that "rumble strips" feel. I haven't had a chance to look under the car yet, so I'm wondering if it's basically drop the pan, and change the filter, fill it up and go? I know I also have to drain the TCC, does it have a drain on it? or how do I go about that?

Thanks

Pretty easy but a bit time consuming....

Yep, drop the pan, change the filter and button it back up.

To change the torque converter, there is an inspection shield that needs to be removed (2 bolts, I think). Rotate the engine BY HAND (put a socket on the front of the crank) until the drain plug comes around...can't miss it. I think it is a 10mm socket that fits the plug.

Be certain to have a good sized pan under it, as you'll get about 9-10 quarts.

I refill mine with 5-6 quarts of Mercon V, start the engine, put in another 5 quarts and start checking the fluid level.

Have fun!!

Thanks :)... I actually just found this article as well:
http://www.crownvic.net/tech/transservice.htm

My biggest concern was whether or not the TCC on the Towncars had a drain plug or not... seems like it will be pretty straight forward... I'll get on it in about an hour.

Disconnect the upper cooler line, get 5/16 OD clear tubing (Lowes/HD) (connect to the cooler connection on the radiator, or you could configure another line to the tubing and connect to the cooler just to flush, upon conclusion of the flush just reconnect your original line. Secure the line good, to avoid getting things messy! Be very careful with your line, it is very prone to bending and breaking. Place the extended connected clear tubing into a 12 qt bucket (walmart). Start the car "DO NOT ILDE THE ENGINE LET IT SELF ILDE". Let 3-4 qts go into the bucket at a time, per the inner qt increments inside the bucket. Once you have at least 3-4 qts in the bucket, shut the motor off, and refill via the refill tube with a funnel in the exact amount that was drained out. Keep doing this until the fluid becomes nice and clear, and bright red! Usually you would go through 12-14 qts of good fluid (Mecron V and or Dexron 3 ATF Universal). Once the fluid is clear and equal extractions have been replenished, just reinsert the line and tighten it. Cycle your shifter/gears, while your in park for a few minutes. Check for leaks and then take it for a drive. I do this for all of my automatics every 10,000 miles or so, however I would wait much longer if I was using synthetic fluid. But I like the fact of every 10,000 or so with blended/ and or regular dino fluid, whereas one can inspect more often. My 93 cartier tc currently has 260,000 plus original miles (Volvo 740's/850's 250-500,000 plus original miles). NGK V-Power plugs, Lucas Upper cylinder lube for the fuel, in addition to other premium parts/lubricants. Shell V-power fuels too! [B]www.toptiergas.com Simply costs effective and extends the life of the transmission. Unlike a power and or solvent flush, the tranny won't have bits of crud lodged in the line, and the transmission is not stressed. A good remote filter and cooler would complete it all. My car runs incredibly smooth 99% hwy mileage 25 plus mpg at about 1,000 miles per week! Once in a while you could drop the pan for a cleaning and change the fluid, but if you get a [B]good remote filter setup going, the chances of the internal one clogging are very slim to none. However, I would still recommend changing the pan filter in addition to this flush, at least once.

Best Regards:)

Hi

I think it would be a great idea if we had a tech section where some of the common questions such as this one could be answered.

i really don't like the idea of simply flushing the trans and not servicing the filter in the pan. I'm always concerned about what sorts of goodies are laying in that pan. Remote filters are a good idea and all, and they will help keep the fluid cleaner but I don't think 100% of the fluid is sent through those cooler lines so any filter on that line is only getting a portion of the total amount of whatever thats in the fluid.

Oh yes it does - 100% of the fluid is pumped through the cooler - if it wasn't, how effective would flushing be?

I looked in the tech section, did a forum search, and did a google search... so, let's not be an a$$h*le :)... thanks for the help everyone

point out the tech article D

in fact you've been complaining about everyone's questions for the last couple days, apparently forums are a bad place to ask for help huh...

I found the article I mentioned above from the forum search... so don't even start with the "I didn't try looking for an answer first" crap

Not to mention, great as all the articles are, especially dereks, they are not always blatantly under Town Car, and not always under 1990-94 or 1995-97.
lastly, the search is good, but its not all that. for instance, one cant do a search on ABS, you get :

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : absIts like you have to live in the house of three bears to get it, 'ah just right'!
I for one enjoy reading even duplicate posts, because no one car problem is the same. No obligation to reply, move on!:D

agreed... also, I pressed Ctrl + F to open find, and typed in "trans", "transmission", "drain", "fluids"... and none of them brought up changing or flushing the transmission fluid... that post above pi$$ed me right off since it was incredibly rude with no substance to back it up

in fact, D's smart ass posts to questions about air suspension lately, and this question are starting to look a lot like reposts... at least a reposted question gets other peoples questions answered... reposted bull$hit only feeds one person's ego...

goodnight people :) and thanks for all of the people that actually did help

Hi Joker_Six_T_Nine

Point out the tech article D?

Please would be nice, manners maketh the man! I geuss being one of the 90% you can't help it so I will forgive you and point you in the direction of This Tech Tip (http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00044.html) with some nice pictures of changing the transmission fluid.

let me point out that you were "one of the 90%" well before I was... your response was incredibly rude and disrespectful, so I was rude right back to you... I'll say thank you for pointing out the article, but I will not apologize to you for your bull$hit and unecessary attitude, I'm a very polite and respectful person, anytime I've asked for help on this site I use please and thank yous and always do my best to show my appreciation, so don't say I'm "one of the 90%"... when someone belittles me, or needs to feed their ego at my expense, I'll step up and make my point known... even your response showing the article is condescending, "with some nice pictures", like I'm f***in 3 years old? I'm done...

have a good day, and thank you for the help
