I was on Ebay a few nights ago and I saw a 1996 Town Car with I thought it said around 75-80K from South Carolina. I almost fell out of my seat when he listed that he gets just about 30 MPG on the highway and 25.2 in the city. The 30 I can almost believe on a hot summer day, but the 25.2 in the city....... no way in hell.
Does anybody get this kind of mileage?

Well, I get around 27.2 Highway, and around 21 or 22 City.....even I think its CRAZY, but the AVG. MPG guage doesnt lie!
I think 25/30 is too high, esp. due to the fact the car was rated as 19/24 I think.

I get nothing like that, but some people do. Maybe 23 highway.
And city driving varies widely between location. When I drove through Surry, VA a week ago, I think there was only one stop light lol. :)

Summer day 30mpg highway. Yes, I have done it quite a few times. 25 mpg city? Only if you live in Denver, and only are driving out of town to the east!
In my car 217-18 city. I average 20mpg between the two. Today it was 2 degrees out. My mileage dropped to 27 highway on my daily run into town.

As has been posted 30 mpg highway isn't all that uncommon but I averaged around 18-23 city depending on my "city" driving in my 94 Towncar. I have actually averaged 33mpg round trip on an 1800 mile trip from Nashville TN to Hatteras NC and back in my Towncar.

Holy Cow !!!
What am I doing wrong?!! I'm averaging 16.5 MPG in a mix of 80% city and 20% highway. On the freeway my computer does register some high numbers like 25 to 27 and sometimes surges much higher with my foot off the pedal.
I'm not a lead foot driver but I do live in Souther Cal and my commute to and from work is 14 miles round trip of city driving with plenty of red lights.
16.5 MPG average for the last 7 tankfulls. I have a trip planned to AZ next week and I'll keep an eye on what I average there but if i recall last time I think I got 21 average MPG on a 1000 mile highway trip. Lots of uphill though.
I posted my MPG here http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm
You have to click the year then Lincoln then Town Car. Mine is a 97 so is registered under that year. I'm the guy from CA.

I'd believe the 30 on the hwy
but probably shave 3-4 off for the city IMHO, still that's pretty good for the largest car on the road !

Jazzy, Maybe the gas formulation in So. Cal has less BTU's/gallon? The ethanol thing out here is quite controversial.

I have kept track of my mileage for the past ~13600 miles and the overall average (calculated) is 19.89 mpg. I would estimate 40% interstate (75+ mph), 40% 2-lane (60 mph) and 20% local city driving.
I think that is a pretty realistic figure for a 92 4.6L land yacht with 193K on the clock (analog). The best I ever saw was 26.1 on a 55-60 mph trip. Mileage is 1-2 mpg better during the warmer months vs. winter months. Add a quart of oil at 1100 miles, 2200 miles and change it at 3K. I use "real gasoline" rather than the blended "corn whiskey" variety.

Well, lots of idling and stop and go will really eat economy. If I have been driving in a lot of traffic or stop and go city over a period of time, I will get a tank full of Chevron or Shell 93 octane and run her hard on the interstate for several miles. I only do it when it is safe as in no weaving in and out of traffic but I run her hard up to 100 on occasion to get any gunk blown out. She seems to like it and has lasted 230k with that regimine. I hope my brother gets another car soon as his Towncar is giving him fits and he doesn't bother with maintenance and I can't afford to maintain my two Lincolns, his Towncar, and help my girl with her truck on what I make. He is driving my Towncar right now and I am planning on taking that back over once he gets something else and going nuts on my Mark. New paint and pulling the motor and trans to work them over on the cheap. Maybe Explorer intake, bench porting of the heads, slightly higher performance rebuild of the trans and a rebuild of the trac-loc. I hope to have this done before spring. Once that is done I am parking the Towncar so it can get the same treatment. New white repaint, performance rebuild of the trans, regasket the engine and do a few performance tricks here and there, 3.55 rear with trac-loc and finish my custom console and in-car PC. Oh yeah baby!!

I'm lucky if my average mpg gets into double figures, especially around town or the 2 - 3 mile trip to work.
Though running on LPG at 42p per litre I used £26 worth to do almost 200 miles, mainly highway.

The ethanol thing out here is quite controversial.
Shouldn't be
it's 15 to 85 % less money to countries that hate us and buy weopens to arm our enemies
I'll put up with a few drawbacks for that.

This is getting way off topic, but I like the idea of ethanol, but I don't think corn is the best source for it. Using sugar to produce ethanol is more effective, you can get more fuel out of it vs what it costs to grow the sugar in the first place. Also, why make fuel out of something thats perfectly well suited for making whiskey, vodka, and cornbread? Besides, start using large amounts of the food supply for fuel, and the cost of meat and anything else using corn goes up because there is more corn demand.

We don't get the real 85% ethanol up here yet
but the 10-15% stuff is the cat's @$$ for us Winter types. No need to add gas line anti-freeze to every tank, like we used to have to.
Also, after it clogs your filter with gum from the tank the first few times, it keeps everything clean as a whistle.
The other bonus, for us, is you get a minimum 89 octane for the same prices as 87 unleaded.
Yeah I know it's not as efficient as "pure" unleaded but, for us, the ups outweigh the downs.
And like I said, it benefits American and Canadian farmers, not some seething, hate filled Al-Queda supporter who uses the money against us and abuses foreign third world workers.
I get your point on the animal feed prices rising though.

My 1996 Signature @ 127K miles, w/16" inches wheels usually gets 26 MPG mixed--highway with some low speed local street driving using 91 octane. I do not have a lead foot but usually travel at 65 MPH looking ahead for red lights, stopped traffic, etc. The trick is not to STOP--keeping the tires turning. Pure highway @ 65 to 75 MPH, I have hit almost 30 MPG but that's rare. It all depends on how flat the roads are. Going downhill all the time, I've hit 99 MPG but the return up hill trip is 01 MPG!

Correct, I think flat roads are the key to this whole discussion of 30MPG on the highway.

Some of you guys are getting incredible MPG figures.. I am lucky yo break into double figures for mpg. I have a new airfilter in, and do not get any check engine light come on (unless the previous owner removed the bulb or cut the wires).
The other thing to take into consideration when calculating gas (petrol) consumption figures is, a UK (Imperial) gallon is more than a US gallon.
1 Imperial gallon = 1.1 US gallon
So therefore if a lincoln tc got 30mpg using 1 US gallon, it would get 33mpg using 1 (uk) imperial gallon. (I hope ive worked that out correct, Ive only guessed LOL).

Kev baby, I think the computer program inside your townie was written to calculate with good ole American gallons. So your dash computers MPG reading should be pretty close. However, when figuring it out yourself using the miles traveled and imperial gallons you just pumped, then it will be off a tad. Your check engine light should come on momentarily upon starting the car.

Doh !! I never thought about that, an American car reading mpg using US gallons LOL. I think most I had is around 14 mpg, except on a really long run, in town anywhere between 6 and 12 mpg. Good thing is that by taking into account the reading is for US gals, I'm getting more economy when I compare it to Imperial gallons.

Back and forth to work I generally get about 20-22 mpg, maybe 23 in the summer. In winter it drops to 19-21...around town I have gotten as low as 16, but that was totally city stop and go. From s St louis to Indianapolis I got 25+, and could not get 26 even by cutting the speed and coasting a lot. I am pretty happy.

Highway MPG varies vastly based on speeds. down here in FL I get mid 20's (25 is about average), but I cruise at nearly 80 MPH. When I go to states that have speed limits of 55, my MPG goes up to the high 20's/low 30's.
In town I'm usually in the area of 18-20 depending if the A/C is on or off and how heavy my foot is that week.
