That car has 41K on it? $700 Did you make him an offer he couldn't refuse?

The transmission wasn't shifting right when I bought it and they thought it would need a new one. All that was wrong with it was that the TV cable had fallen off due to the bushing coming apart. $2.00 fix and a quick readjust and it shifts like a brand new car.:)

To be fair it does have a few other things wrong with it. I'm going to have to replace the headliner soon as it is starting to sag some. Previous owner was a smoker and nothing ruins a headliner quicker. The rear windows are going to need to be repaired the motors run but nothing moves. Passengers front power window only goes up and down with the drivers switch. Previous owners grandkids had a ball with all the switches when they were in the car, hence I think they are wore out. I can't seem to make the keyless entry work.Not sure if the climate control is working right or maybe I'm not working right who knows? And lastly the air ride was removed by the previous owner to them it was a old car and not worth the expense of replacing it even though the car only had 35k on it when it quit. It has the crown vic spring/shock combo on it. But I'd say all in all it was a sound buy for the money minor problems and all. I will say this you sure can't beat the way it goes down the road!

Not, to insult your intelligence, (you probably already know these things)
1. Headliner - NAPA and such carry a type of glue for a DIY job....not too hard to do, you just have ot make sure its TIGHT
2. Rear Windows - Most likely, the nylon gears have gone bad......very simple to replce there is a tech article on it.
http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00198.html
3. Passenger Front Window - Check the Window Lock feature, and make sure it isnt on the LOCK position......also, it may just be a loose connection. Remove the door panel, (easy to do) look at the switches from the bottom, look for broekn connections, or loose wires.
4. Keyless Entry - Possibly not working because the orig. owners stuck their own code in there. Refer to owners manual to reset it.
5. Climate Control - whats it doing?
Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the info. I've been reading all the tech articles on there and they are quite informative. I'm waiting for it to warm up before I tackle the back windows. With the headliner theres a guy around here that will redo it for $50 and it saves the hassle of messing with it.
With the climate control the fan only blows on vent and only at high speed even if the selector is set to auto. Any other position only produces a trickle of air. The blend door is working as the temp changes from cool to warm as you move the temp slider. Also the venting changes from floor to panel to defrost like it's supposed to. I am also not sure if the a/c is working. I have set it to a/c and the compressor hasn't kicked in but that may be because the fan isn't working or if it's like a dodge if the outside air temp is too cold the compressor won't kick in. It has been cold here so that maybe something I have to test once it warms up. I have had 3 cadillacs and all had the auto climate control and not a one of them worked worth a damn . I am hoping the lincoln isn't the same way.

Well, the climate control system will act up eventually....stuff gets old.....good news is, all the things that happen to them are very common. There are tons of users on here that have had problems, and could tell you how to fix yours. I, for one, am not one of them :D

No need to remove the door trim panel, just remove the switch mounting plate by prying the front edge to reveal the switches and connections.

You oughta be charged with theft !

great score ! Think about treating your AOD (transmission) to a $30.00 one of these;

read up on it here;

I'll have to look into that. It looks like a pretty well done mod. I am worried about these AOD trans. I know they are no good. I had a 89 crown vic with the AOD in it, the overdrive was out on it. I did however drive it 26,000 miles like that! I don't know if it was luck or what. I had already planned a tranny cooler for the TC. It's just a smart move but the filter is a nice touch. I have a 91 plymouth acclaim with the automatic overdrive trans in it, every mopar Od trans from the 90's is crap. I put a tranny cooler on it the first week I bought the car and changed the fluid and added some lucas to it. The car now has well over 300k on it and as of yet has had no trans problems.

Mechy, On this deal YOU MADE YOUR OWN LUCK! You were brave enough to buy a TC that you thought needed a tranny! Kind of like the guy who buys ghetto property four years before heavy "urban renewal" and everything triples in price. Nice job! With the price you paid you can do lots of little work and still come out ahead! BTW I paid over $100 for my headliner.

You cannot change the factory code. You can add codes but the factory can still be used.

Skinhead,
I read that tech article and it makes sense that is what is wrong with my car, however when I looked under the hood I saw nothing on the blower box like is described in the article. I realize thats a newer Lincoln but still I didn't see anything even similar. I will have to look again tommorow.

It does look a little different, just look at where the two heater hoses go into the dash, then look right underneath that, there will be a electrical connection going into a little black box, thats what you have to remove, its held on by 2 screws (I believe, I kinda forgot since I did it such a long time ago)

I did buy a haynes manual for my car. It never fails however that it never covers what I'm working on! LOL The manual tells of a thermal limiter resister assembly that is mounted to the evaporator case. I am assuming this is the part in queston. The manual however doesn't explain how to remove it only how to test it. Just my luck! I'll just have to dig in and find it.

Why don't you just download the FLM service manual, burn a CD and use what the manufacturer uses. It's so simple and has all the information you need.

Hi,
It all depends on how BENT you are on changing them...You cannot change the code from the Key Pad..but if you open up the Keyless Entry Module and Re-Solder ( ie change tap locations on the board for the 5 resistors ) it is most certainly can be done...whether the previous owner was ate up enough to do it..I sincerely doubt it.

Mechy, Haynes doesn't help very much on a machine as complex as a townie. The wiring diagrams in the ford service manual are worth their weight in gold. I have the paper and the CD versions. I use the paper books more because I can sit in my chair and ponder the myriad of wires etc. They also have a little grease on them as I can take them out to the car while I'm working on it.

I agree, but Haynes, for all the bad rap, has its place too. Especially for newbies. My mom gave me the Haynes when I bought my TC as sort of a car warming gift. Ive used it alot over the year, some repairs, some of it just to get to know my TC better. Read mostly on my somewhat uncomfortable porcelain chair.

For the windows, try just replacing the Driver's switch. Min had the same problem & thats all it took. Make sure all the tabs are present & all screws can be tightened propery & are not stripped out. It may be necissary to replae the "wood" panel that the switches all attatch to. I got my TC for $300 & it had some of the same issues. Been working my way through them. Most ae pretty simple & not as bad as you would think. Good Luck with yours

I have a 1994 town car the climate control just quit working the other day.I had it set @ 70degrees and it shut off had been working fine till then.Now if i set it in auto i have to turn temp down to 60 degrees for it to stay on.I i turn on max or norm ac i have to turn blower control to hight to make it work but as i said in auto it will woork correctly if i set the temp for 60 degrees.
