I'm not sure how to answer the poll. I think option 4 would be the closest to my situation but my TC is definately not "just a car" to me

This has been said many times, but why would you convert and have your Lincoln ride like a Crown Vic

Air springs if you want to spend the cash for the ride. Metal if not. Thank God we live in a FREE CAPITALIST Society. I am glad the government can't force me to carpool with a Yugo.

When you're a broke ass college student like me, coils are the way to go. We know it's not the best, but it's kinda like eating Ramon Noodles, of course there's better food out there, but it gets the job done... :p

i am with skinhead on this one :hide:, being in the same situation. however you have to make it interesting and start mixing  ramon noodles to make odd flavors and try eating in them different ways, like with a straw, or it starts to get old.:p

Ok I gotta say it. If you are talking about putting air suspension on any other type of vehicle but a Lincoln. It 's called "bagging the suspension" because you put in air bags in place of springs or in conjunction with springs to adjust your ride height. Regardless of what fancy word Lincoln came up with they are still rubber bags filled with air that replace the springs. If you follow other types of street customizing trends like I do air bag and air spring is a completely interchangable term. As a matter of fact back about 10-15 years ago before companys started offering a wide range of airbag suspension kits, people were pulling the air suspensions off junk Lincolns to "bag" their cars with. I saw a Monte Carlo once at a car show that had Lincoln bags on all 4 corners to drop the car.

coils because i can't tell the difference and it's cheap as hell to do. besides to me it's just another car and not a big deal.

The air suspension is well worth maintaining and repairing before it falls apart completely from neglect.

you missed "coils because i'm tired of messing with an air suspension" option.

Can you really tell a difference between the air suspension vs coils? Coming from the drivers perspective though, or is it more noticable for rear passengers instead?

On the roads I drive on, I do notice a huge difference on some road conditions.
If a road is smooth and well-engineered, I don't think there is much of a perceptible difference.

There is a reason why air suspensions are available when buying a vehicle, whether its a truck, bus, rv or luxury car. If there was really no difference, they wouldn't be around because they are a bit more of an expense and bother.

If you are going to go to coils, why did you get a Town Car in the first place? A Crown Vic can be had for less, and already has the non-adjustable coil springs. Sheesh.

My Lincoln still rides like a Lincoln even with the coil springs on the back of it. I have driven ones that still had the air suspension and IMHO I couldn't see a difference or a small one at most. I owned a crown vic with springs and my TC still rides better even with the coils. Ok I'm done on the subject! Unless someone posts something else I feel the need to open my mouth about! rofl

the reason your TC rides better (as far as you are concerned) is because 1. softer seats, and 2. softer front springs.
I have ridden in TC's w/o A/S and I noticed a difference, but not enough to make me say, "coils are the worst thing for this car" or anything of the sort... I'm just a OEM guy, and I prefer Air Ride, that is all :)

On the crummy Florida roads there is a significant difference.

80s models had coil springs. They rode fine. The air springs are really nice for load adjustment reasons though, the mushpile stock 80s coils do not take well to lots of weight in the trunk. I have auto-level suspension so its not an issue, coils, an air compressor, and a ride height sensor. All the cost benifits of cheap coil springs, and the auto-level abilities of air springs.

actually someday i do want to do proper air springs on the back of my car but more to see if I can make it work vs anything else. I'd also like to try and use the variable assist steering system which is integrated into the air suspension controller.

Thank you!
If air springs were sufficient to control road variances, do you think Ford would have wasted $$ on adding shock absorbers? I personally dont see much difference in the air ride either from cars Ive owned with coils. The air suspension is more for sway and load than dampering a comfortable ride. Crummy shocks will kill comfort regardless if all the springs are air or coil, new or old. One thing I see constantly is an 'eighties' TC tooling around with 4 people in it, and the rear wheels buried in the wheel well. Same thing Ive seen towing a trailer too. Youll never see that on a nineties TC, unless the air is blown, or they have coils. And while I love my 97, and not too crazy about the late eighties, Ive always loved the 80-81 version, all square and such, that long pointed, raised hood is to die for. (Ford, IMHO always had THE best hood lines from Elites, to Tbirds and Cougars to Lincolns). If I had one of those, I might put regular air shocks in like my 72 Caddy had.
Cheers!

The best argument for air suspension is the self height adjustment feature that keeps the car at a nice ride height even when you have the coffin and 6 casket bearers as passengers. End of story !

Do that with you coil spring retrofitted/hillbilly fitted Town Car and watch the sparks fly from your A$$ end while you go down the road. Do you think FLM used it on their flagship luxury car for no reason?

Ahh crap here we go again. :) If it makes anybody feel better I've been talking to SSO in msn and he has about got me convinced to put the air springs back on my car. From what I can tell the rest of the parts are there and operational. I also happen to know where there is a TC in the junkyard that was wrecked that has brand new air springs in the back. I need to go get a part off of it this weekend anyways for someone else in the forum.

What about the boring constant rate coils up front? Oh yeah, You'll always get used to the ride and just want it smoother than ever before, like me, the car would've made me broke if I continued to try to get that PERFECTLY smooth ride.
