Just Picked Up This New Project Car now in addition to my Mark VII. This is my first Mark VIII lsc. I bought it from the original owner. I'm a contractor here on long island and I bought it from one of my customers. 90,000 miles. I stole it for 1800:eek:(and its an eye catcher) It does have its small share of problems like most such as, Speedometer / odometer does not work, (all it reads is -------- and I get a distance error message), the heat does not work either (just blows cold air - think it may be that blend door), and the air ride compressor kicks on every couple of minutes or so when in gear, plus when the doors close (weird). A little bit of a rought idle when in park(gonna do a full tuneup on it before I start trouble shooting. Slightly pulls to the left when braking(passenger caliper but I'll change both) Overall the paint looks real nice(no dents/dings or major scratches) but in 3 spots it just faded out alittle bit. I plan on having everything fixed and cosmeticly as well... This is not an everyday driver vehicle for me so it should be a fun car to cruise around in when complete. Its definatly drivable now. As a matter of fact it runs great. Lots of power LOTS O POWER!!! Fully Loaded as far as I can tell. Gonna post some pics in a minute

I did feel alittle bad (for about 2 seconds though). Then I grabbed the title and ran.... (they can only move so fast in those walkers) lol:D maybe thats how us contractors get our bad reps.....;):D

That's typically a sign of leaking bags somewhere. When you have it parked overnight, does it drop at all?

Sharp looking ride you got there, sir!

My boss and I do a lot of work with Maria at Ace Tool in Wantagh, you closeby there?

Yeah Ace tool Is about 10 minutes from me.. Wantagh av... Small world:)
I've never seen the car drop. Not even alittle bit. I left it out there without a start for a few days..that compressor kicks on like every few minutes when in drive.. It will never kick on in park. I was thinkin maybe a bad wheel sensor.
BTW Thanks for the compliment on the car.....

Wow, doesn't drop but compressor kicks on in drive... weird. Well, at this point it's not urgent, but when you're ready to troubleshoot it there is a self test you can run that will get you started:

Wheel sensor won't have anything to do with it :)

The vehicles are designed to do a few interesting tricks at specific times and a few tricks at random times...lol.

When you start your car, you're generally sitting inside it. At this point, the air ride compressor kicks in and levels the car off (front first, then rear) whether or not the doors are shut. After that point, the air ride computer uses inputs from the door ajar switches and the height sensors to determine if the load has changed, and makes it's adjustments accordingly. This stage of the game requires all doors to be closed. When you're underway, the system averages information to make adjustments after a preset time (I think there is a thirty second delay.) It is not impossible for the system to make running changes in heights at any of the four wheels while you're going down the highway (think high-speed lowering when you hit 60mph.)

If the car doesn't drop noticeably over night, I wouldn't concern myself too much with the compressor coming on every now and then, it's normal operation according to the shop manual.

One thing, though. If you can hear your compressor, it's nearing the end of it's useful life. They get noisier as the miles pile up. Mine is new Motorcraft and it is completely imperceptible from inside the car, where the old one was a noticeable buzz in operation. I hear the rear solenoids click from inside the car, but that's it.

This compressor is very noisy... Very noticable. My Mark VII I can hear alittle but this one, the mark vii is extremely noisy. Its old so maybe i'll change it out.. We'll see... Thanks:)

The noise is almost always the isolators being shot. If you do a search for those, I believe somebody sells the things for a few bucks. As long as you don't mind the wrench time, a few bucks to get rid of most of the noise is well worth it :)
But yes, they do get noiser over time as well from tolerances getting loose, and that's just a sign of age.

Remove your air silencer while you're in there. It'll make your life easier getting to that comrpessor too.

I was in there earlier today in efforts to remove that silencer. As soon as I pulled it outa there I noticed the compressor. I shoulda taken it out while i was in there...isolators ? I'll look into that.... But what is it and how do i go about changing it?;)

nice looking project, usually a " project " looks like doo doo !!!!

There are four bolts that hold the compressor to the housing. Said bolts have rubber sleeves on them to help deter the vibration of the compressor from being transmitted to the housing. Over time the rubber deteriorates and tears, thus not acting as an isolator any more.

Basically you remove the old bolts and put in the new ones. Sounds simpler than it is, lol.
