I am looking at buying a 1996 Mark VIII and the Carfax has it listed as an LSC but where the 1997's hae LSC on the trunk is a Linconl tag. Could it be an LSC without it?

They all have the LSC on the back. Carfax might be like other services, defaults all of them to LSC status even if they are not.
Only way to know for sure is to look for the chrome less bumpers, perforated leather seats, etc.

A real '96 LSC will have HIDs up front too.....

I got severly frustrated with this when I was looking for an LSC. So many people listed LSCs that were in fact not.
Got in the habit of asking them if there was any chrome on the doors.

only some real LSC's will have HID's. alot of the 95 1/2 LSC's were changed to halogens at the dealer due to a wiring issue.
regaurdless, all LSC's will have the badge on the trunk as well as the chromeless mouldings.

to get picky, lol...the VIN might denote LSC, while the badge on the trunk lid might have come off, it's adhesive ya know.
Isn't the VIN different in regards to either a 1 or a 2 at the beginning of the sequence for LSC's? I remember my insurance company telling me something about that when I bought my car. They asked if it was a LSC, I said no, but they looked for the digit.

The 7th VIN digit was a 2 for LSC and 1 for base in Gen II models. All the Gen Is had a 1 in the 7th digit.
