View Full Version : Washed the salt off today

Finally got around to washing off the road salt off the 90' today
Washed and rinsed her twice and went at her with wax and chrome polish (it's a 90', we have chrome).
Washed the wheels. Need to Flitz them again and badly. Clear coat is 5% missing on them overall I'd say.
Trying to devise a way to spin the wheels with a drill (off the car) so I could hold different grades of sand paper against the rim to strip them.
Cleaned and treated the vinyl top with the stuff I got from BMW. Washed and polished all the windows, inside and out.
If I get time tomorrow I'll finish cleaning the interior out. Got started and then the dinner bell rang.
Just went out and put the hose away and my efforts look worthwhile, what a shine ! and no more salt an dirt looking back at me.
Danged Winter !

Any friends at a tire shop? Use their balancer to sand the wheels.

Easy spinner/turntable platform that will rotate on a flat surface:
Buy 3 fixed casters (NOT free-rotating-- fixed wheel is very imortant.)
Cut a circular piece of plywood and mount the casters equally spaced apart near the edge. Each wheel must be parallel with the edge and perpendicular to the radius.
Hand-spin the platform, and with a pencil find and mark the exact center as it is spinning.
Drill a hole in the center, and insert a long bolt with locknuts to attach to the drill directly, or affix a scrap block and screw in a big phillips screw in the dead center to use a phillips drill bit to turn for varied applications.

Great idea
Thanks 95'. I'll ask my mechanic buddy how slow his goes. If I can't entangle my knuckles I'll try holding some sandpaper against the wheel whilst it rotates.

Having starting troubles
but I'll have that worked out in a jiffy (think it's the TFI). It got all new sheet metal (and I mean ALL new) 3 years ago, so it's looking pretty good too;

I'd like to re-paint it again this Summer and smooth and shoot the top blue too, but we'll see how time goes.

Yeah, I know the FSB folks will help you sort that out though.
That is far straighter than most newer Broncos in my area, lookin' good, and to me that paint looks darn good in the pic, but that can be deceptive.
I had a smoothed body colored top on my '80, I felt it looked cheaper that way. But, to each his own.
Is that a Dodge Diplomat I see? I had a '87 Grand Fury and a '78 Diplomat.

That's a '90, they have more chrome, your car has such a nice blacked out look, and I want to have the time to do that to mine, and you already have it, it is just unfair.
Come to think of it, that's about the only thing about six's TC I don't like. :p

MINE is? Its a Midnight Opal Clearcoat Metallic upper, with a Medium Opal lower.
(resembles a charcoal grey upper? and a medium grey lower)....
its darker, yes, but blacked out? lol really? :D

Well I meant the chrome, it just seems to have that minimalistic less is more look, not in total but a sort of black out look to it. The two tone paint scheme and all that dark trim makes it look more sinister mob luxury sedan and less of a car meant for seniors wearing blazers and boat shoes having yachting excursions on land. I'd trade my system for that color and trim scheme any day. With the right wheels, tires, uprgrades and audio equipment I'd consider swapping a kidney and an arm to get my TC done up with that sort of look.

Yeah the FSB people are fantastic and fanatic about FSBs
Yes that is a 5A (RWD Fifth Avenue). It's a near mint 85'. I've had an 84', 85', 86, 87' and 88', as well as a full load 78' LeBaron (same M-body underneath).
My 87' and my 84' both got the warmed up 360 Thermoquad/worked 727/ 8 1/4" Suregrip treatment. With a 2.45:1 rear end they would pull 60 mph in 1st, 102 mph in 2nd and at least 140mph in drive.
Getting there was half the fun. In spite of the performance I could still nail down over 22 mpg on the hwy at 75 mph.
The ride at 90 mph+ is effortless, smooth and comfortable. I ran 255/60/15s on Mirada CMX 10 spoke wheels.
Great cars and UBER reliable. Left them in search of EFI and an OD trans. That brought me to Ford as GMs had the stone age throttle body EFI, fully 10 years behind Ford's EFI.
Once I discovered the remote trans filters, the AODs no longer scared me ($2000.00+ rebuilds).

p.s./
The chrome lips came with the car. Seeing as it's a hard top too I decided to keep them. I would prefer a less loaded TC, with no hard top and dark blue with dark blue interior, but white has impressed me after three years.

Why do you think I bought it? :D
I *do* plan on replacing ALL the bumper trim, as mine is 14 years old, and have that light "yellowing" tinge to them....hard to tell, but I know how real chrome looks.....
this here, it's noot as shiny as it was 14 years ago, and I like shiny :p

It's plastic chrome, so it won't ever be *right*, real chrome went out with the older models. I forget which year it went to plastic. I'd use some plastic polish first. You should get that clearcoat fixed before you sweat the small stuff dude.

The stuff is stuck in between the chrome insert and the plastic itself :( It won't come off...

I will get just the trunk and roof repainted this summer (only trouble spots TBH) I just don't wan't it to look liek it has been repainted. :(

Just get friendly with the painter, tell him your fear of the job looking sloopy, and reassure him of his talent by slipping him an extra benjie.
