What are the pros and cons for removing this?

The intake resonator? Pros - removing a piece of useless plastic, and the engine makes a cooler noise. Cons? Um, not sure of any.

Even a girl can do it. ;)

Other than having a "cooler" sounding car, what proformance increases are there? Better gas mileage?

Why would ford put it there in the first place?

The engineers at Ford tweaked it to reduce the intake noise as much as possible. Keep in mind, these were originally $40,000 luxury touring cars, so the original buyers were not hot rodders :)

Will it, in and of itself, increase your performance or economy? Not by a noticable amount. Do it at the same time as removing the silencer and modding the airbox to maximize the gain.

There is another benefit to removing the silencer - less chance of sucking up water! (by removing the silencer you move the air intake higher up) Also, makes accessing the air compressor easier. (if you still have it of course)
