My father just bought a 98 Mark VIII LSC 2 weeks ago. We got it home, and just less than 1/2 mile from my house, it started having brake issues.

What we have going on is, when youre coming to a stop, the brake pedal starts pulsing, but not quickly like the wheel is locked up, and with every pulse, there is a metal to metal type sound. When you release the brakes, a loud pump kicks on, and pretty much vibrates the entire floor board. This pump will run anywhere from 10 seconds to probably a minute or two. Occasionally longer. When you apply pressure to the pedal, the pump will stop.

We have replaced the front hubs, checked the ABS sensors and they were clean and in good shape, replaced the rear rotors, but I didn't get under there to look at the rear ABS sensors.

There is no ABS light on the dash, and no other issues other than an air ride issue, which seems to be the vent.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

well, first of all, congratulations on your new ride! You're going to love it, but she's going to cost you money when she breaks. Hey, isn't that the case with all vehicles? LOL.

What you're describing makes me think that you've got some very severely warped rotors. If you feel it in the steering wheel, it's probably the fronts. If you feel it in the seat of your pants, more likely the rears. Metal on metal sound indicates no friction material left on the pads on one or more of the brakes.

If they're that messed up, it is possible that this is somehow triggering the ABS module. I would start with new brake rotors and pads, get a professional job done right, and if the motor sound persists, you can always disconnect the ABS function until you can get that repair done. Hey my ABS and traction control have saved my butt many times, but I understand that the ABS module is very expensive.
