The guy at Ford in the parts dept says that 1995 was the only year that had the chip or whatever you call it in the key and they don't make spare ones .I don't know just what he said.

My production date is 9-94, and my key doesn't appear to have a chip. It does have a plastic thing around it though, and could be hidden in that. I've never attempted to use without the presence of the key fob too, which could be hiding some kind of chip.
What's the paint code on yours?? Most of them I've seen are 2 digit, mine's 3, BA2. I swear that thing CHANGES COLOR. When it's overcast, it looks gold?/silver?/brown?. When it's sunny out, no doubt about it, it's PINK. Anybody else's like that?

To answer the original question, no chip in the GenI keys that I ever heard of. They look cool though :)

Sad part with these cars is that techs and counter guys at the stealerships typically don't want to concern themselves with cars of this era and will just feed you a line of BS to make you go away. Alternatively, they might have to do a little research and maybe actually learn something or put forth some effort, but that's not going to happen.

Disclaimer: in all fairness to dealership techs, there are a bunch of good ones out there, just few and far between. To those of you who do, thank you for your hard work!

you mean like $250.00 to install a suspension module.

I needed a key for my 92 Mercury, and the dealer told me that ford only kept track from 96 up. I'd previously needed a key for my 72 Mercedes, and while it took awhile, I eventually got one from Germany that worked. Needless to say ford didn't impress a whole lot.

I think it's fun!:) Reminds me of Hawaii, the rental car co's had specific instructions to make SURE you look at what your car looks like, not just it's color, because the street lights are special on account of the Keck Observatory, and the cars tend to change color in it. So if I was in Hawaii, my car could quite likely have a 3 color mood swing...:)

Where you were looking at:
BODY MLDG INT TRIM R S AX TR
BA2 A ZQ 6 7 U

Look above it at:
EXT PNT JB
BODY MLDG INT TRIM R S AX TR
BA2 A ZQ 6 7 U

I used my 96 as an example, its paint code is JB, but those are the two digit paint codes that you are looking for.

you arent looking at your paint code correctly, ba2 is not the code all the mark VIII's say ba2, look at your sticker again and above the words exterior trim is your paint code, no mark VIII ever had a 3 digit code, the code is right above the word exterior, thats why you cant find what color your car is cuz you are looking at it wrong!!

To agree with Lux Rules, 1997 and 1998 Marks are the only ones that had the chip in the key. It's called Securilock Passive Antitheft System (PATS) and was a great feature that continues today.

Along with making the vehicle a pain in the butt to steal, it also prevents you from locking your doors with the key in the ignition... Not entirely a bad thing :)

1996 and previous Marks had the plastic head on the key only as an appearance enhancement, nice little logos and all, right?

The paint thing, there were a few colors that were tri-coats and cost extra. Those can definitely color-shift in changing light. I think some of the other colors were tinted clearcoats that also changed a little.
