Has anyone run into this? got the trans back from the rebuilder. All of the worn parts replaced. trans back in car and no 3rd or OD. checked the TV cable adjustment and it was good. I have been using this rebuilder for 15 years and I have never had a problem with his work. I think it may be the valve body. the trans did have 302,000 miles on it. Could it just be worn out?

A complete transmission rebuild includes the valve body. I'm sure that this rebuild came with a warranty. Take it back and let them do it right.

The valve body is out and going back to the rebuilder today. He thinks it may be leaking. He had no problem going thru it again, actually he was very apologetic and was willing to give me money back!

No shifts beyond second gear are usually a dead direct clutch, though if there is a leak between the valve body and transmission case, all bets are off. The AOD valve body is tricky to seal properly, and if its not just right it will do all sorts of funny things.

I hope I can help a little here. I rebuilt my wife's '90 Mk7 tranny. I put it in and had the same symptoms, no 3'd and no OD. Well, I wound up taking it back out and found the 3'd shift servo (2-3) is a plastic piece that I had just replaced the 2 seals on. It had cracked when I put it back in the first time. so i got the upgraded unit that is a one piece molded and metal piece. Put it back together and everything worked great. It wasn't allowing the vb to build up pressure to shift to 3'd and then OD. I originally thought it was the valve body at first and went to the picknpull and got another vb and put it on and that did not fix it. I would be willing to guess that the plastic servo is cracked on yours too. He can fix that without pulling the tranny, just have to drop the vb to access it. Good luck, gary.

Thanks Gary that was my thinking as well that there was a problem with the 2-3 servo.

Found the problem (hopefully) something wrong with one of the spline shafts. No charge for anything even tho I offered.

Must be the direct input shaft wasn't seated properly or was damaged. That could definitely give you no 3/4.

The direct input shaft to the 3/4 drum stripped out the splines in the drum. When it failed I was climbing a steep grade at about 55 MPH when it shifted out of OD into 3rd. My rebuilder couldn't figure how he missed it. even though pulling the trans out a second time was more work I'm still into the project for less that $500.
