View Full Version : 85 LSC stock exhaust...

I just bought new, stock Walker pipes for my 85.
-2" extension pipes, check.
-2 DynoMax (Walker) Super Turbo mufflers ($31 each from Rock Auto, mfgr closeout) 2" in, 2" out, check.
-2 Tailpipes?? Left is 1 3/4" and Right is 1 7/8 !!
All per Walker.

It's not a big deal, I was just a bit surprised. I called around to various places and found that those tail pipe sizes are listed for multiple manufacturers, from cheap junk to high end parts on stock pipes. Those smaller pipes won't really matter on an 85 CFI-HO motor (we're only talking 1/4"difference), but I've never seen a car with 2 different size tail pipes.
It's more puzzling that they are both smaller than the pipes upstream and are the longest pipes in the system. I would think they would be the same size or slightly larger.
Anyone know why this is? Slight added back pressure for emissions, maybe? The original tail pipes look like the replacements, but I haven't measured them yet. The crimped bends over the axles in both look like they make the overall diameter even smaller.

the stock mufflers are different size and i think different length as well as the different diameter tails. It was done to eliminate exhaust drone. It was definitely not for performance.

You're almost 100% right. My '92 LSC has the same "off size" stock Walker (OEM supplier to Ford) system. The reason for the differences was, like Gadget said, to reduce the "rumble" ( that's also why the counter-weights are installed to help reduce noise vibration) and also to save money; this way Ford didn't have to go to the expense of installing resonators. ;)

Thamks guys,
Now that I read the replies, I recall hearing about the different size pipes some time ago. I just totally drew a blank when I saw it.
I'd sure like to see 2" pipes all the way back, but I'm sure these will be fine.

Easy ... get a set of BBK Shorty headers and 2" pipes all the way back. ;)

I thought it was supposed to be 2 1/4 stock?

Yup, different sizes to reduce drone. Might as well keep the factory engineering in this case: the CFI Marks aren't meant to set the world on fire with their performance. :)

Hey Pro, 85 was a "screaming" ~160 HP!! Not bad at all for a V-6........uhhm, well..... yeah.
Well, I installed it all today. I had the tail pipe inlets expanded to 2". I had to add about 3" past the mufflers as they are slightly shorter than the originals. (Walker doesn't mention that).
The 85 CFI/HO LSC is not a race car by any means, but this one sure sounds agressive. I'm liking the Super Turbos.
We'll see what it's like on my 60 mile commute to work tomorrow. Most of it is ~70 mph for about 54 miles. Any drone will be very evident.

Tomorrow will be the "shakedown cruise" for the 85.
I've driven it around for 2-5 miles at a stretch. The most was 25 out and back, that's when the axle seals failed. Work and back is 120 miles, mostly highway. Tonight I whipped it for about 25 miles and nothing broke
Wish me luck

One very good reason to get rid of the CFI...

HO CFI was actually like 200 hp, probably a bit faster than the non-HO motor. I'd still be curious what one would do at the track though.

According to the specs in the Standard Catalog of Ford, it was 180HP.

Just out of curiousity, how does the CFI-HO long block compare to the 88 HO-EFI long block ? Did it come with the E7s ?

gadget73

no, those heads didn't exist until 1987. Same block, slightly more agressive cam, bit bigger injectors in the CFI unit. Thats about it.

Nice score BTW.

Lincoln Mark VII
Engine Codes
1984 - 1992

"The official engine code of your car when produced can be located on your build sheet or as the eighth character in the Vehicle Identification Number of your Lincoln Mark VII."

http://www.thelincolnmarkviiclub.org/documents/tech/engineCodes.pdf

Different engine codes in different years (and even models) had different HPs and torque. Upgrading the intake or exhaust changes the recipe.

I would like to score a stock exhaust system from ANY year Mark VII. Did I miss the resource or was it not mentioned?

John, the basic Walker Exhaust System IS the stock Ford OEM system. Available from any MIDAS shop (installed of course) :p

I've not used Midas yet and didn't know that I could get a stock replacement system from them.

You should likely be able to order the Walker stuff from any parts store, though some will also carry Maremont or may only carry Maremont.

They did my exhaust system last May. Walker OEM parts. A little over 400.00 (for a dual exhaust system)from the CATS back.

Jack beat me to it, That's the Mark VII diagram from the Walker catalog.
If you want to DIY, Advance Auto Parts carries Walker. They can usually get the parts next day for the Mark VII. They don't show the alternate mufflers in their computer lookup, but they can get them.
I used the 17736 Super Turbos. They are about 2" shorter than stock and do not have the mounts for the stock hanger. I had to get a bit creative.

Is it your car or someone else's that has the tailpipe tips sticking straight back? I can't remember.

FWIW-

I am receipt of a replacement set that was offered on eBay for less than $180. plus shipping. I haven't opened the box yet or examined it so I can't offer much except that when I open it I will get pics and give a report.

Maybe it was your car then. Was looking at pics in the club gallery, and I saw a black LSC with tips that stuck straight out. Thought it had PA plates but honestly not sure.

Not mine, because they weren't ever put in there. The black one may have had quad-tips.

All kidding aside about the CFI HO motor, it doesn't do tooo bad. The extra 40hp over my non-HO 84 is a welcome kick in the pants. The extra oomph from the 3.27 gears is a good part of it though.

My 16 year old son learned to drive in the 84. The only thing he could say when I let him drive the 85 was "Holy Crap!" with a big grin on his face.
A few days later we had the daughters El Camino out (350 4V Auto) out for a test drive. I had to pry his hands off of the steering wheel and his right foot out of the carb. I swear, his first car will be a Pinto with one plug wire missing. He's too much like me at 16.
BTW, I've since apologized to my own Dad...
