Just wondered if anyone had any usefull tips in fully removing the smog equipment from my 87 T/C Cartier, as I'm installing headers next week and would like to eliminate everything at one time. Thanks.

the smog pump? yeah thats easy. You can cap off that pipe that runs around the back of the head, remove it and use short 5/8 bolts if they'll thread into the ports on the head, or cut the pipe apart and flip the "blocks" over so that the metal part is bolted against the passage on the cylinder head. The ports are almost always clogged with carbon, so the chances of getting a bolt in there is fairly slim.

Remove the smog pump and use a 560K6 belt to run the AC. Cap off the black and white vacuum hoses that went to the smog control solenoids. If you want to do this a bit neater, you can redo all that mess over there on the passenger fender and just run the connections to/from the upper solenoid. This runs the EGR valve. Don't remove the EGR valve, it will set codes on the computer and reduce fuel economy.

Thats about it.

Thanks for the tips. Doesn't sound too bad. I've also got a set of shorty headers for a Mustang for it. Should those be alright since I have to plug the air injection pipe when removing the smog stuff? It's my understanding that it's the only thing that would cause an erratic idle. I guess I also will order an "H" pipe for a Mustang so that relocating the oxygen sensor will be easier. Of course I'm assuming that the "H" pipe will fit, maybe you could advise me of such.

Mustang H fits, but it wont bolt to any of the stock exhaust. Depending what you want to do, there are a few options. You can use 2 1/4" mid pipes for some Chevy S10 application (i can get you the part number if you want, a friend of mine has it memorized), 2 1/4" offset/offset mufflers, a 2 1/4 to 2" reducer and use stock tailpipes.

Other option, Mustang mid-pipes, straight 2 1/2" extension pipes, 2 1/2" offset/offset mufflers, Dynomax tailpipes for a 96 Chevy Impala SS, and extensions behind those. It sounds wierd, but those Impala tailpipes fit extremely nicely under the back of the Panther chassis cars. They end just behind the axle tho, so you'll need some pipe to get it closer to the back of the car. I have this setup on mine, and it fits surprisingly well for a collection of parts that were never designed to fit with each other or on this car.

dual 2 1/2" exhaust is kind of big for a stock motor though. If you have no plans on doing more with the motor, you might want to go with the smaller stuff. If you have upgrade plans for the future, go with the larger pipe. A possible in-between option is to use stock Caprice or Impala tailpipes, which ought to be 2 1/4". The SS pipes are actually cheaper, about 40 bucks each through Advance. Summit has them too, but you pay a handling charge, and last I checked it ends up being cheaper buying them through Advance.

I actually already have the converters cut-off, and 2 1/4" pipe ran out on it routed as the factory did with chambered "flowmaster" knock-off's, and it actually has a nice deep growl to it. I do plan on more mod's I've actually got all of the stuff for mass air flow setup, and am saving to buy the Holley Systemax setup for the car. Hopefully by March it will be well underway. I have too many iron's in the fire as they say. I need to finish my race car up before the new year, and then I'm sinking all my assets into my T/C. I sincerely appreciate the help.

Why don't cha just weld in O2 bungs

into the Mustang shorties, like I did;

read up on the install here;

The Dynomax Impala SS mandrel bent tailpipes let you use 2 1/2" mufflers if you want to (I did) and fit beautifully. If you only want 2 1/4" tailpipes, just order stock Impala SS replacements.

I used this to add to the back of the tailpipes, after the axle, and get me out to 3" by the rear of the car;
