Diesel

I have a 92 MkVII LSC. I want to put a diesel in it. There was a Diesel MkVII built, and I want to find one so that I can get the engine. Does anyone know where I may find one?

Putting this where you'll get some better answers. Those of us with round Marks aren't too familiar with that funny sounding fuel...

Diesel Mark VIIs are very rare. (I don't know an exact production number)

I DO know they were not a ford powerplant. I think they were something like a Mercedes ,VW desiel or something of the sort. --I'm sure someone will chime in with more info.
GOOD LUCK!

A BMW diesel IIRC. The diesel Marks are suprisingly common up here in NY. I guess they're so unusual, people are loathe to crush them

That they were. Word was back in the day that you would cruise it right up to the Bimmer dealership for service, confounding even "people in the know." There were actually a few of them rolling around in my little home town of 8000 back in the Eighties.

I seriously doubt the Bavarians designed anything from the ground-up just for another manufacturer's platform, you could find out what domestic model BMW that engine was originally used in and cross-reference up some parts.

Its not just an engine: its the transmission, the wiring, the gauges, the computer, the rear axle, the firewall, the exhaust...do you see where I'm going with this?

You should just buy a Mark VII diesel and sell your '92.

Unless you want to spend thousands of hours trying to put a square peg in a round hole.

My vote is 5.9L Cummins.

Seriously though, any dizzle swap is basically going to require you strip the car to the unibody and start from scratch. Entirely different fuel system, driveline, modify the trans tunnel, custom k-member and mounts for motor and trans, new HD cooling system, intercooler, probably need a cowl hood to clear the taller motor (unless you can find the original Bimer dizzle), etc etc etc.

So ask yourself, is ripping out the 5.0L worth the $15k-$50k you'll spend swapping in a dizzle? What will you have when all is said and done? Well, the original Bimmer dizzle made a whopping 100hp and like 200lbs/ft of torque? On a good day? Certainly not a screaming performance engine, which leads to the idea of a modern turbodiesel.

It's a growing trend, there's been some REALLY nice erstomods done with Duramax and Cummins motors. Unstoppable torque, 20+mpg... yes...

As they said, if you already had a diesel Mark, you'd be much better off using the assembled car and doing what you want to it rather than transplant all the stuff into the 92. I've seen one running diesel Mark, and its a real Charlie Foxtrot under the hood. Its an amalgamation of Ford and German (Stehyr actually) electrics and other parts. The notion of swapping all that is pretty scary. I'd sooner transplant a 1992 dashboard into the 84 than move the driveline the other way.

The guy who owned that 84 claimed mid 30s on the highway though. They are not fast by any stretch, but it would make a heck of a highway cruise machine. Also, I think it was more like 120 hp

BMW actually bought the engines from Steyr and sold them to Ford. A friend had one in an '85 Cont'l. and the head cracked. Replacement cost ? = $5200.
I had a chance to pick up an '85 VII TD a few years ago for $2200, drove it, liked it (especially the vent windows), but it had a nasty turbo whine - not normal - so I passed.
Now I almost wish I'd bought it for the windows.

I had entertain the thought of trying to jamb the PowerStroke into a Mark ...Hell, they put 460s in Fox Mustangs

Then go for a tweeking on the electronics/turbos and you could have a car with a killer 1/4th mile!

I figure the PowerStroke would give you the diesel clatter with more power and probably for less $$ than trying to Bimmer-size an existing M7.

Do it man...no pressure here tho

I've got 2 of them.

Mergan,
I have two of the Marks with the BMW diesel. Its a very good engine, will get 35+ mpg and has good cruising power. The idea of transplanting into a gas-powered vehicle is daunting, it would require lots of changes, though it uses the same hood and wouldn't require a different trans tunnel. If you'd like more info, email me at ron@midrivers.com, I'd be glad to talk with you about it.

Markedman90, I have an '84 with the vent windows. Its rare to see them, this is the only one I've seen. Are you interested in having one?
