IIRC, Ford's still upside down for the year.

Toyota's #1.

I won't worry until Hyundai outsells Ford. Then something has gone horribly wrong.

I just wonder how profitable they will remain with UAW not allowing them to change in order to compare to GM and Chrysler operating cost.

I just find it interesting that 2-3 years ago, world+dog said Ford was in the worst financial shape and doomed to failure. So far, they are the only domestic auto maker turning any sort of profit and not on the government dole. They must be doing something right.

I respect the attitude of " No thanks, we don't need any stimulus money". Just like in any personal life, being on your own without Mom and Dad's deep pockets to fall back on creates all sorts of smart ideas to save and earn money. I am sure a few citizens also appreciated that and bought Ford when the time came.

That's because people are short sighted, and Ford wasn't. They saw the future (like most everyone following the industry) and took the 21 billion dollar loan when they could.

So far so good. I think 2010 will be a wash, but 2011 will be good for this company.

Don't be hating on Hyundai, lol. If they had a full-size pickup platform, they'd have already done the unthinkable (I say that driving a Ford product and still loving the brand.) They've gone and done in a few years what took Toyota more than a decade to do, and they're on the eve of launching a luxury brand as well (Remember Lexus launched in late '89)

They are still in worse shape than GM and Chrysler. Ford still has all their debt and they have less favorable union contracts. They do have a more favorable image with the public, however.

This from a recent article about the Ford - UAW negotiations:

"They have twice as much debt on their balance sheet as what General Motors does," Gettelfinger said. "We want Ford to do well, and we knew as they continued to improve, that it would make the ratification a little bit more difficult."

http://http://www.freep.com/article/...S01/91013022//

The brand X's benefitted from bankruptcy in that much of their debt was wiped out and their labor contracts renegotiated. So their balance sheets are healthier than Fords and their cost to build cars is cheaper. The downside of bankruptcy (and the bailouts) is the hit to their reputations.

Another disadvantage is that the UAW is now a major shareholder in GM. There seems to be a conflict of interest here. Why would they want to give Ford an advantage over the business they own?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the US automakers including Ford need another bailout within five years.

Considering the UAW rejected Ford's contract (which was to make them the same as GM and Chrysler), they are not out of the woods. Course I woulda rejected it too, the "no strike" clause may work if the UAW owns a huge chunk of the company, but it essentially castrates the Union at Ford.

A lot of people in Detroit need to grow up, and face the music.

We'll see what the UAW does when Ford moves more manufacturing plants into right to work states and Mehico. Truly amazing that the unions can't pull their collective head out of their ass far enough to see that their rediculous demands and requirements have been and will be the downfall American industry as a whole, not just the Big 3.

Then again, if I had a clause in my contract with Intel that said if Intel fires me I get mucho $$$ for years after my last day of work, allowing me to take a very long vacation from reality...
