Power steering question 98 Conti

My 98 Conti has the 3 levels of steering assist which 97% of
the time works great BUT ..... Every so often it will stiffen up
much harder than the minimum assist setting and the message
center will inform me to "check steering assisit". If I hit
reset the message goes away and most of the time the
full assist comes back in a mile or so. Sometimes though it
stays stiff until I park the car for a bit. When I get back in
and restart it all is normal. Also once in a while in hotter
weather, If I have to idle for an extended time, like in a
fast food line at breakfast time, It will go stiff on me and
call for a reset. Any Ideas from any of the Conti wizzards ?
It intrigues me that the car seems to know it is doing this
and generates a message. Is the part of the chassis and
drivetrain computer that controls this maybe messing up
and realizing it, or something mechanical doing this and
the computer senses it ?
BTW, it has a new rack and ps pump on it and it was this way before they were replaced
for leakage problems so I dont think it is either of those. H-press hose is new also.

I leave my steering at the mercy of your suggestions

Thanks in advance from ..... Da' PHRAWG !!

Possibly a bad sensor?

Could be, but if it were just a pressure sensor why would the
actual flow to the power steering change unless it was sending
like a false high causing the variable orfice to close way down.
Kinda confusing to me. Hoping maybe someone has seen this
symtom and knows how they fixed it. Thanks for the input.

Could this possibly be a default reaction the computer makes when there is a reading out of range of the PSP sensor?

Hmmm... Thats a good thought ! I suspect it is something
on that order. That got me thinking, Plugs and harness
maybe intermitent. Seems funny it did not get affected
when I had ps pump and rack replaced, but, you never
know. Appreciate the suggestions. Phrawg
