‘89 TC A/C Belt

Hey y’all. I’m changing my belts and wondering where the slack lets out on the A/C side. The air pump? The Haynes doesn’t specify. Any specific procedure? Thank!

The idler pulley that sits below the AC compressor is the tensioner. It has a front bolt shared with the AC compressor as a pivot, the one that actually slides goes in from the back. I want to say its a 13mm head. There is a 1/2 square drive hole in the front of that thing where you can stick a ratchet to tension it while you lock down the bolt on the back side.

Give it a spin while the belt is off. If it grumbles, replace it. Some you can replace just the pulley, others you have to replace the whole thing but last I checked both should be available. If its got an obvious bolt head in the middle of the pulley, you can replace it. If it has a steel "hat" in the middle of the pulley those are not designed to be serviced.

I changed the belts on my 1989 TC last summer and wouldn't have a clue without looking, I don't have that kind of mind.

Work on one for long enough and you just remember where stuff is. I've had mine since 2004 and I've had the engine out twice now and done I think four water pump jobs on just my car.
