It means there is an active fault in the system which is being compensated for. Get the codes read ASAP before it is unable to compensate any longer.
p.s. The Owners Manual says to take it to a dealer immediately...

od light flashing
ok ,i got the coed for the light that was flashing , it is po 0713 which is saying the trans fluid is high , i did a test with a scanner with an identical car (99 tc) and the trans temp fluid was actually higher (the farenheit ) there is also a another reading for this and here it is ( trnfluidtemp(v) now this reading was low on the non coded car (about 1.8 and even lower at times , and on the car with the light flashing it was 4.75. these readings were taken from the data selection from a snap on scanner . any ideas ? bad temp sensor? thanks !

od light flashing
it turned out to be the temp sensor , which is the hardwire that connects into the transmission and runs the shift servos and reads temp.

Thanks for the update! Glad to see it was a simple (ish?) fix!
