Question Trouble going into gear and check traction control light on

I have a 99 Lincoln Cont. with the strangest problem. I started it one day and it would not go into gear. The button won't go in on the shifter.

But if i just turn the key on, then press the button in on the shifter, start the car then shift it into gear it's fine, but the "check traction control" light is on. Runs fine.

Any ideas?

I have a question when you press the brake pedal do you brake lights come on? When my boo, brake on/off switch had a faulty wire. I couldn't go into go on my old 93 crown vic and i had to do like you did to get it to gear.
