DECODING THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER / CERTIFICATION LABEL

The Vehicle Certification Label is located on the LH front door lock panel or door pillar. The upper half of the label contains:

  • The name of manufacturer
  • Month and year of manufacture
  • Gross vehicle weight rating
  • Gross axle weight rating
  • Certification statement

The label also contains the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number, used for warranty identification and information about the vehicle. The VIN is also located on a small metal plate attached to the upper dash on the drivers side of the vehicle.

The identifying characters indicate:

   This seems to vary from manual to manual - Ford may have reused the codes over the years

Position 12 - 17 | Production sequence number

  The last six digits indicate the Consecutive Unit Number of each unit built at each assembly plant. The consecutive Unit Numbers begin as follows:

600,001 - 999,999 Lincoln/Mercury division vehicles


The remaining information on the label consists of the following vehicle identification codes:
