AIR COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT / 95 TOWN CAR
Submitted by Jim / 09-06-02

AIR COMPRESSOR REMOVAL

The air compressor is located beneath the engine air cleaner and the windshield washer fluid bottle.

IMPORTANT:
Turn air suspension switch (located in trunk) to OFF position. Never work on any air suspension component with this switch in the ON position. For additional safety disconnect cable from negative terminal -  this also prevents shorting of wiring during removal and re-connection of power connections.
  • Remove air cleaner sensor by rotating counter-clockwise.
  • Loosen band clamp and pull duct loose.
  • Remove 3 hex head mounting screws from air cleaner (1 front, 2 rear).
  • Work air cleaner up and out and lay it back onto the engine.
  • Remove the washer bottle by removing 2 screws and disconnecting sensor and  fluid line. Lay bottle aside. (You may lose a little fluid.)
  • Look down into the opening and find the black plastic cover with two (2) snap in fasteners. Pull straight up. With some effort these fasteners will pop out. The air compressor is now exposed.
  • Disconnect the power plug from the connector. With your finger or thin blunt tool, push down on the red or orange ring at the dryer assembly air line fitting. This ring covers a brass fitting in the dryer. The air line locks into this brass fitting and will not release unless the dryer fitting is held tight against the dryer. It takes quite a pull to get the line out of the fitting.
NOTE: The air line connection on the rear air spring solenoid uses this same type fitting.
  • Now go beneath the car and find the three (3) small bolts with hex head nuts. These will be in the pattern of the holes in the bracket shown in right photo. Remove these nuts and then lift the compressor unit from the car. Not shown in the photos above is an external mounting bracket that has to be removed from old unit and installed on the replacement compressor. Rubber grommets fit in the compressor’s mounting brackets.
  • Remove the external mounting bracket from the compressor unit by pulling the 3 screw studs out of the grommets.
INSTALLING THE NEW COMPRESSOR
  • Remove the grommets and install in the new compressor and then reverse steps to install the external bracket.
  • Remove the small red/orange ring from the old air dryer and place on the new dryer. I didn’t know to do this on mine but it turns out it is really not necessary. It only aids in pushing in on the brass fitting.
  • Reverse all steps to install the new unit back into the car and reinstall washer fluid bottle and air cleaner. Don’t forget the connections to the bottle and air cleaner.

Congratulations - you're finished!
