CLEANING THE EVR FILTER
Submitted by pro-five-oh / 05-16-03

If your car has a bad idle or stalls but gives you no EEC trouble codes, the problem could be a dirty EVR filter. The EVR is part of the EGR system on your Lincoln; it bleeds off the engine vacuum that operates the EGR valve. When the EVR gets clogged, the EGR stays open and kills your smooth idle.

Where do I start?

The EVR is located on the passenger side strut tower on the Mark VII and the 1984-1987 Lincoln Continental. On some vehicles the EVR assembly may be mounted upside down to the strut tower to what is shown in the following pictures.  The 1993-1996 Mark VIII EVR is under the engine cover near the back of the passenger side valve cover, or visible on the 1997-98 models.  The picture below shows you the EVR’s shape and location relative to the engine on a 5.0 Mark VII.

Once you find the EVR, remove the black cap that holds the filter in the assembly. Brute force is not necessary, just pull from the underside of the cap to release it from the EVR assembly.   In case you are wondering, your car will not idle with this cap removed, so don’t break it! When you get the cap off you will be faced with two scenarios:

  1. EVR filter is intact
  2. EVR filter has crumbled into a million-billion pieces (or something like that)
If the latter happens, you can go to the Ford dealer and buy a new filter. Or just go to a junkyard and get another filter from any of the millions of EEC-IV controlled Ford products. It is worth your while to go to the junkyard and grab a few!

Clean it!

With the filter in hand, soak it in mild soap and water. A small cup works well here. Clean the filter until it becomes soft and spongy. Let the filter dry naturally and clean the EVR assembly with a wet cloth while you wait. Reinstall the filter onto the stick protruding out of the EVR assembly. Replace the cap.

And with this, you are done!
