95-97 TOWN CAR EATC SELF DIAGNOSTIC TEST
Submitted by Tman70 / 06-13-05

The EATC On-Board Diagnostic test will detect concerns in system functions during the Self-Diagnostic and will display current and intermittent DTCs for concerns that occur/occurred during the last 80 ignition 'ON' cycles of system operation. The vehicle interior temperature should be 60° - 80° F and the engine should be at normal operating temperature when performing the On-Board Diagnostic test. If the temperatures are not within the specified ranges, false in-car and/or coolant temperature sensor error codes will be displayed.

NOTE: An OBD2 scanner is NOT necessary for this test.

EATC = Electronic Automatic Temperature Control
DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code
OBD2 = On-Board Diagnostics version 2

  1. Normal operation of the system stops when the On-Board Diagnostic is activated.
  2. To begin the On-Board Diagnostic, turn the key to the 'ON' (RUN) position, then press the OFF and FLOOR buttons together (at the same time) and release, then immediately (within 2 seconds) press the AUTOMATIC button.

    NOTE
    : On my 95 TC, I had the engine running and had to turn OFF the EATC system before pressing the first two buttons otherwise it would not initiate the diagnostic.

    The display will show a pulse tracer going around the center of the display window. The test may run as long as 30 seconds.
  3. Record all error codes displayed during the test.
  4. If any DTCs appear during the On-Board Diagnostic, follow the diagnostics procedure given in the shop manual or post them in the forum for advice.
  5. If a problem exists, but no DTCs appear during the On-Board Diagnostic, refer to the Symptom Chart in the shop manual or post them in the forum for advice.
  6. To exit the On-Board Diagnostic and keep all stored codes, push the blue (cooler) button. The control will exit the On-Board Diagnostic and keep all the stored DTCs in its memory and then will shut itself down (display blank).
  7. To exit the On-Board Diagnostic and remove all stored codes, press the Defrost button. The vacuum fluorescent display window will show 888 and all function symbols for one second. The control will exit the On-Board Diagnostic and remove all the stored DTCs from memory and then will shut itself down (display blank).
  8. Make sure the On-Board Diagnostic is ended (display blank) before turning off the ignition key. NOTE: Intermittent DTCs will be deleted after 80 ignition switch ON cycles after the intermittent condition occurs.
NOTE: Intermittent DTCs will be deleted after 80 ignition switch ON cycles after the intermittent condition occurs.
