On any performance forum you look at, regardless of car brand, there
are always frequent questions and discussions about performance exhaust
and particularly mufflers.
Some folks like louder mufflers, and some like the FloMaster type
sound, but it seems more and more people are looking for quieter mufflers
that still perform well.
With all the brands available, and at a wide range of prices,
it’s
hard to know what to buy even after you decide what type of
sound you want and how loud you like your exhaust.
I’ve recently run across some interesting links that may
help you decide.
The first is a dyno test of quite
a number of the popular Mustang performance mufflers all tested
on the same street performance Mustang with probably a typical
street performance engine combination. They also checked the decibel
readings. This should be a pretty comprehensive test as they’re all run
on the same car, and it is a “real world” test on a

Here’s an interesting clip of a actual sound bites from a lot
of different exhaust/ muffler/engine combinations which, although
not obviously all done on the same car and therefore isn’t
as good of a comparison, gives at least somewhat of an idea of
what type of sound you might expect from different setups.

It seems the Dynomax Super Turbos are one of the most popular
quiet performance mufflers for those that want a relatively quiet
muffler for everyday driving and who don’t want the Flowmaster sound.
I’ve also read that the Dynomax Hemi Turbos are even quieter
and also are at or near the top of the list for performance. They’re
actually designed more for heavy duty applications like light trucks
and motor homes so that is probably why they’re so quiet, but
they reportedly perform as well as the similarly designed but marginally
louder regular Super Turbos. They’re also quite very competitively
priced.

High Performance - Dynomax Hemi Super Turbo Mufflers
I adapted a low miles 2-1/2” Mustang Dynomax catback system
with the Super Turbos to mine from a wrecked Mustang. It’s not
at all annoyingly loud yet sounds nice when you step on it. They do
drone inside the car enough to be annoying between 1500 and 2000,
even with the noise shields I built for over the top of the mufflers.
I’ve read that having equal sized and length pipes all the way
back and especially equal sized/length and the exact same mufflers
on both sides can be major contributing cause of droning, so I’ve
been thinking of changing out just one of the mufflers for
i.e. a different length of the same Super Turbo type, or even going
to a different brand of the same style like using one Hemi Turbo.
An excellent source for any performance information on small
block Ford drive trains is the various Mustang performance forums.
There are many knowledgeable folks that contribute to those, and
the Mustang crowd is, of course, quite performance oriented. Most
of them don’t
